The last couple of weeks were difficult at work because the computer network was frustratingly slow (difficult for the library staff because it meant extra work and frustrating for the patrons because they had to wait and couldn’t get everything they wanted immediately), document.write(“”); adding to the depressing work environment created by the imminent closing. Fortunately, it was not all bad and this week was Christmas come early for me: not only Apple released iOS 5 and iCloud on wednesday (hours and hours of download and installation joy — successful after only two attempts — and after a long set-up process my iPad2 feels like new!), but they also launch the new iPhone 4S on friday (over three hours of wait in a drenching rain in the early morning — I got a cold — plus an hour at Koodo for the activation, to get a new magical device that will replace my old Motorola flip phone, my iPod Touch second generation and even my Canon PowerShot S5IS camera! I am quite satisfied with my black 32Gb iPhone 4S even if it costed me a small fortune). I was so busy in the last few days with that sprint of computer installation that I feel it has been an eternity since I last blogged. I also did a little work around the house, but still found time to read some news (on my new devices):

Un usager de la bibliothèque me faisait remarquer que les politiciens sont d’étranges créatures. Se rendent-ils compte qu’enlever des services à une clientèle adulte qui est en âge de voter pour en donner plus à une clientèle plus jeune qui ne participe pas encore au processus électoral est un non-sens (pour d’excellentes raisons les politiciens voient généralement à court terme) qui frise le suicide politique? Mais qui s’attend vraiment d’un politicien qu’il prenne des décisions rationelles et réfléchies?

Il est incroyable que de nos jours on pense encore à fermer des bibliothèques! Je fais référence ici à l’annonce de la fermeture prochaine de la section adulte de la bibliothèque Georges-Vanier dans l’arrondissement du Sud-Ouest de Montréal. C’est difficile de ne pas être consterné par une telle décision alors que, document.write(“”); dans notre monde moderne, nous connaissons tous les nombreux bénéfices que les bibliothèques publiques fournissent à la société! Malheureusement, au Québec, la culture n’est pas aussi valorisée que dans le Canada anglais et une telle annonce laisse donc bien des gens (et la presse) indifférents. Pour les bureaucrates, qui pensent qu’elle devrait être rentable, la culture est une cible facile. Il y aurait pourtant tellement de solutions possibles mais elles restent inimaginable pour une bureaucratie lourde, inefficace et inflexible…

Je rappelle ici quelques liens sur ce sujet que j’ai trouvé particulièrement intéressants (je ne peux pas trop m’exprimer sur ce sujet alors je vais laisser la parole à d’autres):

Je trouve particulièrement ironique que cette annonce ait été faite juste avant les Journées de la culture et la Semaine des Bibliothèques publiques du Québec… Belle promotion!

Un autre exemple d’à quel point la culture est valorisée au Québec: la Pétition contre la fermeture de la section adulte de la bibliothèque Georges-Vanier a jusqu’à maintenant recueillie 225 signatures. Par contre une pétition contre la fermeture du Bain Émard en ramasse 787 (article), une contre la fermeture de la piscine Schubert en ramasse plus de 4000 (article, en anglais) et une pétition contre la fermeture de succursales de la Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) dans le Sud-Ouest atteint les 7500 signatures (article). Inimaginable!

On commence enfin à voir un peu de couverture dans les média. Mais c’est vraiment encore très peu:

Après la victoire des défenseurs du Bain Émard, les efforts des citoyens du sud-ouest (Coalition Petite-Bourgogne et Les Amis de la Bibliothèque Georges-Vanier) se sont intensifiés dans la semaine du douze novembre et de nombreuses actions étaient planifiés (manifs lors du défilé du Père-Noël et au Salon du Livre entre autres). Quelques personnalités (dont Stanley Péan) ont incité les gens à réagir et les média ont finalement commencé à porter un plus plus d’attention à la situation.

Finalement, vendredi le dix-huit novembre, en après-midi, l’heureuse nouvelle est arrivée: la section adulte de la bibliothèque Georges-Vanier restera ouverte… pour l’instant. Il s’agit en effet d’un moratorium d’un an, le temps de faire de la consultation publique sur le sujet. (Voir le billet Bonne nouvelle pour Georges pour les liens).

The co-founder of Apple has passed away at 56. It is the end of an era. Widely admired, document.write(“”); this great man will be sorely missed. This is indeed a sad day.

Cette application adapte en format électronique pour l’iPad la plus récente BD de Bilal. Pour l’histoire, je vous renvoi au commentaire que j’ai fait sur la bande-dessinée elle-même.

Cette application offre une approche différente de la lecture de bande-dessinée. Chacune des cases défile sur l’écran comme un diaporama, avec une trame sonore originale (par Goran Vejvoda). Il n’y a pas de bulle mais à la place on a soit le texte qui apparait en sous-titres, ou une version racontée du texte (la narration est d’ailleurs faite par Enki Bilal lui-même!). On peut zoomer sur les détails des images. C’est assez intéressant, mais, si j’apprécie bien les formats électroniques, je dois avouer être tout de même un peu traditionnaliste dans ma lecture de BD (ou de comics) et j’aime bien avoir d’abord une vue d’ensemble de la planche et de pouvoir zoomer ensuite sur les cases et les textes (approche que l’on retrouve dans des applications de lecture comme Comics par ComiXology par exemple).

C’est cool, non?

J’adore l’idée de lire en format électronique une bande-dessinée européenne, et une de Bilal encore plus. Toutefois, ce qui est domage c’est que l’on ait pas le controle sur la vitesse de défilement des cases (à moins de faire “pause” et d’avancer manuellement, mais les boutons de controles restent alors en filigrane, ce qui nuit beaucoup à la lecture). Mais ce qui m’embête énormément avec cette application c’est que lorsque la description me dit “cette application vous propose l’intégralité de la bande dessinée Julia & Roem,” je m’attend vraiment à avoir l’intégralité de la BD. Je me disais d’ailleurs que $5.99 c’était vraiment toute une aubaine (alors que la BD en soi est $32.95)! Après avoir acheté l’application, je me rend compte qu’elle ne contient que la première partie de l’histoire et qu’il me faudrait payer un autre $3.99 pour une deuxième partie et un autre $3.99 pour une troisième. Il y a combien de partie comme ça? Est-ce que ça se termine vraiment avec la troisième partie? C’est pratiquement une arnaque! Bon, la première partie est un peu plus chère parce qu’elle inclue l’application comme telle et les bonus (un entretien avec Bilal, de l’info sur la bande-originale, une biographie, une bibliographie et une filmographie de Bilal, ainsi que quelques liens internet). Et même à $13.97, c’est quand même moins chère qu’acheter la BD papier… Mais je m’attendais quand même à mieux de Casterman…

Je suis donc plutôt décu. Mon $5.99 m’a tout de même permis d’expérimenter avec le format, mais j’ai quand même préférer lire la BD papier. Je recommande cette application seulement s’il vous faut vraiment sauver de l’argent et si vous voulez expérimenter une façon “différente” de lire une BD. Sinon, il y a toujours les bibliothèques publiques!

Julia & Roem a été créé par les Éditions Casterman en juillet 2011 (la version 2.0 est parue en août avec les chapitres 2 et 3). L’application est disponible, en français seulement, dans la catégorie “books” (ou “Livres numériques” en français) de l’iTunes Store (tant US, CA ou FR) pour 4.99 EUR (ou $5.99 US/CDN). D’une taille de 277 MB, elle est compatible avec tout iPhone, iPod touch, et iPad qui opèrent avec la version iOS 3.1.3 ou plus. Recommandé pour 12+ ans (Rares/légères scènes de violence fictive; Rares/légères scènes de consommation ou de référence à l’alcool, au tabac ou à la drogue).

Julia & Roem: la BD

Publié en mai 2011 (mais disponible seulement depuis juin au Québec), Julia & Roem raconte l’histoire de Howard George Lawrence, un aumônier multiconfessionnel, qui traverse un désert (Gobi? mer Baltique? Nulle part et partout à la fois) au volant de sa Ferrari électrique. Le monde a été bouleversé par une apocalypse climatique et chacun essaies de survivre comme il peut dans ce monde où tout les repères connus ont disparuent. Sur sa route vascillante il croise Merkt et Roem et les sauve d’une mortelle déshydratation grâce à un de ses mystérieux gadgets militaires. Plus loin sur la route, ils entendent un coup de feu, puis trouvent un rapace blessé (un milan sacré qu’ils nommeront Jojo), que Lawrence soigne. Puis ils appercoivent la pointe d’un grand hotel, réémergeant d’une nappe de pétrole, perdu dans le désert d’une géographie fluide. C’est là qu’ils rencontreront les derniers acteurs de ce drame que le destin semble voué à leur faire rejouer. Réfugiés dans l’hotel, ils y trouvent Julia, son père, sa nouvelle femme Helda, le beau-fils Tybb, et le mercenaire Kyle Fabian Parrish.

Ma première impression a été que Julia & Roem offrait un style et une histoire plutôt similaire aux dernières oeuvres de Bilal. Mais je me suis vite rendu compte que cette nouvelle BD se déroulait dans le même univers qu’Animal’z. D’où la similitude. Mais Julia & Roem est une oeuvre indépendante qui ne nécessite pas la lecture du précédant opus. Cette fois-ci, Bilal nous présente une variation sur Roméo et Juliette (bien sûr: Roem est Roméo, Julia = Juliette, H.G. Lawrence = le frère Laurent, Merkt = Mercutio, Tybb = Tybalt et Kyle F. Parrish = Pâris) où il explore les thématiques des relations humaines et, surtout, de l’amour. Mais Roem et Julia sauront-ils échapper au destin que leur avait initialement attribué Shakespeare?

Julia & Roem présente une histoire plus sobre et plus accessible, ainsi qu’un style beaucoup plus sombre et flou que ses ouvrages précédents. Pourtant il utilise une technique (crayon de bois) et une palette de couleurs (noir, blanc, bleu et rouge) beaucoup plus simples. C’est très beau mais cela me donne l’impression de dessins inachevés. Dans l’ensemble, cette bande-dessinée nous offre une petite lecture rapide mais qui laisse un petit arrière goût d’insatisfaction. On aimerait toujours en voir plus… (surtout après avoir payé $32.95! The same lingering around, document.write(“”); depressing thoughts. Feels like going nowhere. I cannot get any work done, so I read and watch TV. I am still in the fourth book of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, A Feast for Crows. The least interesting one so far. Not enough action and we barely see most of the main characters that we got used to love (at least those who were not killed off). Instead, there’s a bunch of new characters. I feel like Martin is stalling his story (like those Naruto filler episodes!). But there’s only 198 days left before the start of the TV series’ second season. And only two weeks before The Walking Dead TV series restart! I also read news on my iPad (while waiting for Apple’s new announcement next week). Here’s what I found interesting:

Arcade rap

Last year I talked about Gyoko, document.write(“”); a Japanese rock band promoting fish. This week, while watching a traveling show on NHK World, I found a similar story: a group of old ladies working in the Sakae-machi shopping district, located in Okinawa’s capital Naha, decided to fight the economic slump and promote their local market by singing rap in a “music festival” regularly organized by the shopping arcade. They are called the “Obaa Rappers” (Granny Rappers). You can see them perform on YouTube:

After nearly three years working in several libraries I was happy to finally get a more stable schedule, document.write(“”); all in a single library. It seems it will not last as, in January, I will probably be back (if I’m lucky) at working in several libraries, with a schedule varying from week to week. You realize that a society is really broken when the people in power start closing down libraries — even if it’s only a partial closing. I don’t understand: while some boroughs are spending millions to build news libraries and expend their services, one is closing the adult section of its best, oldest and nicest library. And people (or at least the media) don’t really care, focusing instead on the lost of a public pool or a few community centers. I know how to solve this city’s budget problems: there’re nineteen mayors (and a lot more related councillors) too many! While you ponder on that, here are my weekly news links…

Summer Press Review (June-July-August)

I swear I’ll never work six days in a week anymore: it’s too tiring. The good news is that I will have a more stable schedule for fall, document.write(“”); so I should be able to completely recover AND be able to blog regularly. I should also be able to catch up a little more on all the articles and reviews that I started but never put online (including the comments on the latest—and past—Montreal World Film Festival !). Here I am sharing with you the last part of the news links that I saved this summer (either because they were quite interesting or to simply bookmark them for myself). I also just realized that The Gazette, on top of not keeping their articles online very long, are now limiting access to their web page at only thirty articles per month! I understand that the full electronic version should be accessible only with a subscription but, since the web version is already only a selection of articles, they should give a full access to it. That’s really ridiculous! I guess I’ll start reading something else…

Côté “littérature”, document.write(“”); la Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) lance son année Manga. Les principaux événements sont les expositions “Manga: L’art du mouvement” (du 20 septembre 2011 au 30 septembre 2012, dans la salle d’exposition principale, niveau M) et “Raconte-moi un manga” (du 20 septembre 2011 au 13 janvier 2013, à l’Espace Jeunes).

Elles seront entourées d’une myriade d’activités tant pour adultes (voir le calendrier des activités culturelles: entretien avec Keiichi Hara et présentation de son film Un été avec Coo (22 sept., 19h à 22h), visite commentée de l’exposition (1 & 2 Oct, 14h à 16h; 2 Nov., 19h), Un mangaka à l’oeuvre (1er Oct., 13h30 à 16h30), L’homme qui ne voulait pas lire de mangas (6 Oct., 19h30), La petite histoire du manga au Québec (20 Oct, 19h30), Les poses du personnage manga (5 Nov, 14 h à 16h), Les secrets d’un atelier de mangaka: Stars et esclaves (15 Nov, 19h30), Le manga et la perspective (3 Dec, 14h à 16h), et Voyage au pays des mangas (15 Déc, 19h30))…

…que pour jeunes (voir calendrier des activités de l’Espace Jeunes: contes en origami (18 Sept, 13H30), Quel est ton type de manga? (18 Sept, 15h; 16 Oct, 14h; 13 Nov, 14h), Parle-moi BD pour voir! Du côté cinéma, la Cinématèque Québecoise présente, du 7 Septembre au 9 Octobre, “Un Mois de Cinéma Japonais”. On y fera un survol du cinéma japonais depuis les années 1960, ce qui incluera une série de soixante-douze projections (divisés en trois volets: “Expériences radicales : Rétrospective de l’Art Theatre Guild”, “Rétrospective Kore-eda Hirokazu” et “Panorama contemporain”) et l’exposition “Le cinéma japonais s’expose: Affiches de l’Art Theatre Guild.”

Finalement, côté théatre, Usine C présentera, du 7 au 10 Septembre, la pièce de Yasushi Inoué “Le Fusil de Chasse” (adaptée par Serge Lamothe et mise en scène par François Girard). On y retrouve la célèbre actrice nipponne Miki Nakatani. Fait étonnant, la pièce est présentée en version intégrale japonaise avec surtitres français. Douglas Adam, document.write(“”); in his Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, said that the ultimate answer to the ultimate question (about life, the universe and everything — which was lost in the night of time) was fourty-two (42). We know now that, due to an unfortunate human error in the calibration system that built the computer that pondered the question for 7 1/2 million years, “Deep Thought” — the computer in question — was made dyslexic and the answer he gave was misspelled.

In order to discover the real answer, we’ve put together a commission of fourty scholars and scientists (actually, they were fourty-two, but two died before the report was finished and the commission members were thereafter known, for obvious reasons, as the fourty-dudes) to study the linguistic of the computer answer. After fourty-two years, they concluded that the original answer was meant to be “fortitude” — which the Merriam-Web_ster defines as “strength of mind that enables a person — or civilization — to encounter danger or bear pain or adversity with courage.”

So, admitting that the ultimate question was “what’s the meaning of life” as it is largely accepted — although many scholars maintain that the question was purely mathematical — the answer should now be something like “grin and bear it, it will be over soon” or “the human spirit shall overcome”!

Now you have it. I always wanted to correct that.

Summer Press Review (March-April-May)

If searching for and purchasing a new home was already quite an ordeal, document.write(“”); moving into a new place when you have as much stuff as we have was a rather horrible experience! I’ve already talked a bit about it in a previous entry (in french) and in another focusing more on the reorganization of the office. There are still lots of works to do, but I am quite happy with the new place. Anyway, I am finally back on the blogosphere after five months of absence. Si la recherche et l’achat d’une maison a été une expérience éprouvante, le déménagement, lui, s’est avéré une aventure plutôt horrible. C’est que j’ai pas mal de “stuff.” Quand j’ai fermé mon bureau en faveur d’un “home office” j’ai tout rapatrié dans mon sous-sol sans vraiment avoir le temps de faire le ménage. Quand mes parents ont vendu la maison familiale, j’ai tout rapatrié mes affaires dans le sous-sol toujours sans avoir le temps de faire le ménage… Le sous-sol était donc plutôt plein, avec beaucoup de choses qui auraient pu être jetées, recyclées, données ou même vendues. Pris dans l’engrenage du quotidien je n’ai pas fait le ménage nécessaire et j’ai manqué de temps. La plupart des places où j’avais prévu donner du matérial informatique ou des livres n’étaient pas capable de répondre à mes besoins dans des délais raisonable. Je me suis donc retrouvé à jeter tout ce que je pouvais et à empaqueter le reste en vue de faire un vrai ménage définitif une fois rendu dans notre nouvelle maison. Mais ça faisait pas mal de stock à mettre en boites… C’était vraiment décourageant.

Le déménagement comme tel a été tout aussi long et pénible. Ça c’est étiré sur deux jours et un total de quatorze heures. Ça ma coûté un bras mais les déménageurs ont été plutôt cool et professionels. Par contre l’aménagement des pièces s’est fait sans trop de problèmes. J’ai réussi à faire placer les meubles là où je les voulais avec les piles de boites correspondantes dans le milieu de chaque pièce. Tout s’est rangé assez vite sans que les pièces aient l’air trop chargées. Bon, ça a quand même pris quelques semaines avant que le rez-de-chaussez soit présentable et je n’ai toujours pas fini d’installer les rideaux et stores. J’ai bourré le garage avec tout le reste du “stuff” (paperasses, affaires du bureau, etc., toutes ces choses où il va me falloir faire le ménage). Pour le sous-sol, où j’ai installé la salle télé et mon bureau, ça a été un peu plus long à organiser.

Comme nous sommes déménagé dans un espace plus petit et que je ne voulais pas charger le rez-de-chaussée, j’ai tout mis le reste des affaires dans le garage — en particulier tout le matériel relatif au bureau. Le garage était donc plein au rebord au point que c’était difficile d’y circuler et qu’on manquait d’espace pour trier les boites. Même mon bureau, au sous-sol, a été pas mal encombré pour plusieurs semaines. La réorgansation de mon bureau a été toute une aventure en soi. Ayant pris près d’un mois de vacances pour m’occuper de la mise en boites, du déménagement et de l’aménagement, j’ai pris les bouchés double au travail par le suite et j’ai travaillé assez souvent des semaine de six jours. C’était fatiguant et ne me laissait pas beaucoup de temps pour m’occupé de l’aménagement de mon bureau au sous-sol et du ménage des boites dans le garage. Toutefois j’ai dû m’occuper précipitement de ces dernières lorsque le garage a été inondé à cause d’un problème d’écoulement d’eau dans la rue en face de chez moi. J’ai dû réaménagé les boites dans le garage afin qu’elles soient à bonne distance du plancher et les trier pour évaluer ce qui avait été endomager par l’eau. Finalement, après trois mois de plaintes à la ville, des travaux temporaires ont finalement été affectuées cette semaines. J’espère que cela va définitiement corriger le problème…

Enfin, je suis donc finalement installé dans mon petit duplex du quartier Saint-Michel, acheté en copropriété indivise avec ma soeur. Je travaille encore beaucoup et j’ai une fin d’été pas mal occupé (Otakuthon, le festival des films du monde, etc.). Tout cela m’a épuisé et il me semble que j’ai un peu de dificulté à récupérer (cela a occasioné de petits problèmes de santé) mais là ça semble aller mieux. J’ai aussi commencé à lire la série “A Song of Ice and Fire” de George R.R. Martin (qui a été superbement adapté par HBO à la télé). J’en suis au troisième volume (“A Storm of Sword”, qui fait suite à ”A Game of Thrones” et ”A Clash of Kings”). Ça me tiens occupé dans l’autobus et le métro, puis le soir avant de dormir. C’est tellement cool de lire sur mon iPad (quoique dans le métro je préfère lire sur le iPod, c’est moins encombrant). Je lis également “Dispatches from a Public Librarian” de Scott Douglas. Mais là, je me dis qu’il va aussi me falloir recommencer à écrire et à bloguer. Ça me manque beaucoup mais, entre le travail et les choses à faire sur la maison (aménagement et beaucoup de petits travaux de réparations et d’amélioration), c’est difficile de trouver le temps. Ce sont les premiers pas qui sont toujours les plus difficiles à faire. Alors, voici: c’est fait, mais il reste tant de choses que je voudrais dire… Enfin, vous verrez bien.

Montreal World Film Festival 2011

During the eleven days of its duration, the festival will present 383 films from 70 countries, including 230 feature-length and medium-length movies as well as 153 short films. 107 of those features will be world or international premieres and 51 will be North American premieres! We must also note that the poster was designed by Claude Robinson, the jury is presided over by Spanish director Vicente Aranda, the opening film will be André Forcier’s Coteau Rouge, there will be a special tribute to Catherine Deneuve, a master class by Claude Lelouche and Bertand Tavernier will presents his personal favourites. Quite a program in perspective.

Unfortunately, the festival is presenting this year only seven Japanese movies (plus a Japanese-related Brazilian movie): four in World Competition (including an animated short co-produced with Canada and the above-mentioned Brazilian movie), three in the Focus on World Cinema category and one documentary.

After a few weeks of exhausting search—and the drama of a few false hopes—we’ve finally found a new lair. It’s a little expensive and the yard is smaller than what we wanted, document.write(“”); but it is so perfect in many other aspects. Now there’s tons of paperwork to take care of and, of course, there’s the big move (meaning lots of packing to do). I guess we’ll still be quite busy for a couple of months, but our life should be back to “normal” (whatever normal is) by the summer. I miss writing. I don’t even have time to watch most of my favourites TV shows and they are accumulating on the PVR. I didn’t have much time to read news either, but here’s a few interesting ones that I have gathered:

Autant que j’approuve l’idée de la campagne et trouve le clip rigolo (j’aime bien la séquence avec la bibliothèque—pour une fois que le SFMM pense à nous autre!), document.write(“”); je ris moins quand je pense que ce genre de clip dispendieux a été payé avec de l’argent qui sort de ma poche. Ne serait-il pas plutôt temps de consacrer nos énergies et budget syndical à re-négocier la convention collective qui est échue depuis le 31 décembre?

We’ve started visiting houses. So far, document.write(“”); nothing too exciting (too far, too small, too timeworn), but many of my favourite candidates have sold even before I had time to visit. Quite frustrating. In the end it will certainly be a game of compromise and maybe the hardest decision of my life… And there’s so many other things to do that I don’t have much time left to watch TV or read.
