Nothing new this week, document.write(“”); really. Both at work and at home, it’s the usual daily routine: commute, work and go home to sleep. It doesn’t leave me much time to do anything (beside a little reading and TV watching). I am wondering sometime what’s the use to go to work every day in order to pay the bills and eat so I can go work some more. Is there a life after civil service? I shouldn’t complain: another twenty-seven years or so of this and I will be able to retire! Joy 😉 Anyway, I’ve been able to find a little time to catch up with my writing (although it is difficult: there’s always something new to talk about!). And, of course, there was my usual Weekly Press Review.

Today several big websites went on strike. Don’t worry we won’t follow their example, document.write(“”); but we nevertheless want to bring your attention to the reasons of this protest. More details after the jump:

When governments try to legislate against piracy it is quite difficult to strike a just balance between an effective protection and cencorship. The American Congress and Senate are studying two bills (SOPA & PIPA) designed to fight copyright infringement on the internet. However, many of the companies involved with the internet feel that those bills might leave the door open for abuse in a way that will infringes free expression and hinder the opened nature of the internet. Here’s a few links for more detailed information and, if you feel you agree with Wikipedia and the like, please don’t hesite to protest:

35th Japan Academy Prize Nominees

After first being leaked on a “test” page of their website, the 35th Japan Academy Prize Nominees (the Japanese Academy Awards / Oscars) have been finally officially announced today. Le DALIAF

“Le fantastique, la science-fiction et la fantasy composent ce qu’il est dorénavant convenu d’appeler les littératures de l’imaginaire. En Amérique française, et plus particulièrement au Québec, leur apparition se confond avec le début de la littérature canadienne francophone puisque le premier texte recensé, « La Tour de Trafalgar », de Georges Boucher de Boucherville, est une nouvelle de fantastique parue en 1835. Cent soixante-treize ans plus tard, en 2008, année du quatre centième anniversaire de la fondation de Québec, plus de mille sept cents hommes et femmes ont contribué à l’élaboration du corpus des littératures de l’imaginaire en Amérique française. J’ai déjà présenté le DALIAF dans un billet de novembre 2011 lorsque sa parution a finalement été annoncé mais, maintenant qu’il est disponible et que — m’en étant procuré un examplaire — j’ai pu amplement le consulter, je peux me permettre de le commenter brièvement.

Dans son introduction, Claude Janelle justifit d’abord le titre de son ouvrage: pourquoi est-ce un dictionnaire, quels genres d’auteurs ont été considéré, pourquoi en Amérique française, puis il définit le trois genre littéraire qu’il considère comme littératures de l’imaginaire (intéressantes définitions où entre en ligne de compte le fait que l’histoire se déroule dans notre monde ou pas, avec des éléments rationnelle ou pas, et qu’il y ait une rupture de la normalité ou pas).

Janelle termine en expliquant la structure de son ouvrage qui se lit en trois niveau. Le premier niveau est bibliographique: pour chacun des auteurs on donne la liste chronologique des oeuvres (romans, nouvelles, contes, recueils, etc.) publiés en Amérique du nord de 1835 à 2008 et appartenant aux littératures de l’imaginaire, includant traductions et rééditions. Le deuxième niveau est biographique: pour plus de quatre-vingts pour cent des quelques mille sept cents auteurs on retrouve une brève notice biographique qui remet l’auteur en contexte. Plusieurs de ces notices incluent une photographie de l’auteur (parfois en couleur). Puis, le troisième et dernier niveau est appréciatif puisqu’il offre, pour la plupart des textes, une liste de références critiques renvoyant à des ouvrages spécialisés (DOLQ, ASFFQ), journaux ou magazines littéraires. Cela permet de connaitre quelle a été la réception critique de chaque texte.

Finalement, afin de mettre en lumière les auteurs les plus significatifs et distinguer les écrivains professionnels et réputés des “auteurs du dimanche, des étudiants en création littéraire” ou des “écrivaillons sans prétention” Janelle nous offre, après chacune des sections alphabétiques, une série de cinquante-six profils littéraires (incluant Jean-Pierre April, Aude, Honoré Beaugrand, Natasha Beaulieu, Michel Bélil, Sylvie Bérard, Alain Bergeron, Bertand Bergeron, Claude Bolduc, Guy Bouchard, Jacques Brossard, André Carpentier, Roch Carrier, Joël Champetier, Pierre Chatillon, Denis Côté, Emmanuel Desrosiers, Jean Dion, Frédérick Durand, Louis Fréchette, Maurice Gagnon, Éric Gauthier, Jean-Marc Gouanvic, Agnès Guitard, Jean-Charles Harvey, Anne Hébert, Alexandre Huot, Pierre Lacroix, Michèle Laframboise, Alexandra Larochelle, Jacques Lazure, Pamphyle LeMay, Michel J. Du premier coup d’oeil il est évident que le DALIAF est un ouvrage important et significatif. La compilation de l’information offerte par ce dictionnaire représente un travail immense et de longue haleine, et nous sommes extrèmement reconnaissant à Claude Janelle pour y avoir consacré plusieurs décennies. Il va de soi qu’un ouvrage d’une telle importance, malgré tout les efforts de perfection et de minutie pour les détails, ne sera jamais dépourvu d’erreurs, d’omissions ou même de coquilles (dans mon cas il omet ma nouvelle “profession” d’aide-bibliothécaire [depuis 2008] ainsi que la publication d’un texte intitulé “Enfer” dans Erreur Boréal [1987, pp. 9-10], un numéro spécial de Pilône; Ce genre de choses est inévitable et je suis malheureusement sûr que mon cas n’est pas unique) mais ce qui compte vraiment c’est l’immense somme d’information sur la production littéraire québécoise dans le domaine de l’imaginaire. Comme je l’ai déjà dit, le DALIAF est un outil de référence essentiel pour tout bibliothécaire, étudiant en littérature, intervenant de l’édition ou simplement amateur extrème du livre québécois (c’est aussi un bel exercice de “pétage de bretelles” pour les petits “écrivaillons sans prétention” comme moi!).

Toutefois, la taille (plus de cinq-cent pages), la qualité (un grand format en couleur avec couverture caisse, i.e. couverture cartonnée et reliure cousue) et le tirage peu élevé (ce qui est malheureusement le cas pour ce genre de dictionnaire plutôt académique qui suscite peu d’intérêt du grand public) d’une telle publication oblige à un prix de vente exorbitant (79,95 $ !). De plus, ces même facteurs rendent toute réédition improbable. Donc, si vous êtes le moindrement intéressé à acquérir le DALIAF, ne tardez pas trop car il est fort possible que toute réédition et mise à jour se fasse uniquement en format électronique. Quoiqu’il en soit le DALIAF est un incontournable — si vous pouvez vous le payer ou, sinon, vous pouvez toujours le consulter en bibliothèques.

A New “Unshelved” compilation!

Published in the same smaller format than Large Print, document.write(“”); the previous book, it “contains eighteen months of daily strips and never-published-on-the-web Conference Tips, plus selected author commentary and a foreword by Babymouse author Jennifer Holm”. The books ship in February but can be already ordered from the website’s store (it’s not yet listed on Amazon). It’s a must-read if you work (or spend lots of time) in a library! Club de Lecture d’été TD 2012

Une collègue se demandait quel serait le thème du prochain Club de Lecture TD et quand il serait annoncé. Comme il me semblait avoir vu l’information quelque temps plus tôt sur Facebook, document.write(“”); je lui ai dis que je ferais une petit recherche pour voir si je pourrai retrouver cette information. Comme de fait, pour ceux que ça intéresse, le thème du prochain Club de Lecture TD sera le Fantastique (“Fantasy” en anglais). Apparemment cela a été annoncé en juillet dernier. Le titre du thème sera “Imagine.” C’est un thème assez vaste et il ne sera pas trop difficile de sortir des titres pour le club. Vous trouverez une liste de suggestions de titres sur le site du Club. Il ne reste plus qu’à connaitre l’illustrateur/trice pour cette année (normalement cela aurait dû être officiellement annoncé en octobre… mais j’ai lu ailleurs sur le web que l’artiste était Dušan Petri?i?) et voir/avoir le matériel graphique du programme (d’ici mars). Et alors on pourra commencer à se préparer pour le club de lecture d’été (ce qui est malheureusement difficile à faire puisqu’on a pas un accès facile à l’internet sur nos ordis — a moins de jeter en bas de sa chaise un des usagers qui collent toute la journée aux stations internet!).

I can’t beleive it has already been a month since my last “weekly” press review. Obviously, document.write(“”); it has been a busy month. In fact, it was the worse Holidays “vacation” since I can remember. First, on my first day off for Christmas I woke up with a really terrible cold. I was quite congestionned and was losing my voice. It stubbornly lasted for the entire Holidays. Then, after working in-between the holidays at the library (the last day of work I had to move many heavy books and boxes), I woke up on my first New Year’s week-end day off with a locked back. My back pain remained for a few days. On top of it, right after the New Year’s week-end, my mother was hospitalized for respiratory (and possible hearth) problems. I guess such problems are to be expected when you are in your 80s. After a few days (and many tests) in a very crowded emergency she was released from the hospital and everything seems fine now.

I spent the Holidays watching TV (Ken Burns’ The Civil War) and a few movies with my wife (The King’s Speech, Catch Me If You Can, Les Aventures Extraordinaires d’Adèle Blanc-Sec, The Eagle), but mostly working around the house: I installed a few more bookshelves (mostly to put plants up in the sunlight and out of reach from the cats), made sure the snowblower was ready for snow and finished cleaning up the warehouse / garage. I cleared enough space so I can now actually work in my shipping/workshop area. I categorized boxes in piles “for recycling”, “giving away” or “to sort out later” and I finally sorted out all the back issues of the magazine so I can restart filling orders (I know, I know it took quite a long time). It left not much time for anything else. I didn’t blog much (and a glitch made the few funny anecdotes I wrote appear only later), but I read a few books (comments to follow soon, if I can find the time of course) and spent some time on news websites. [ Pour nous faire avaler l’introduction coûteuse de la nouvelle carte de transport à puce, on nous avait bien dit que cela éliminerait la nécessité de faire des contrôles contre la fraude mais en fait la véritable raison était de rendre ces même contrôles plus fréquent et plus facile à opérer pour le transporteur. Le but des contrôles serait de sauver de l’argent en éliminant la fraude mais j’ai bien peur que la solution soit peut-être plus coûteuse que le mal… ]

Quoiqu’il en soit, je me suis donc retrouvé, encore une fois, devant l’une de ces inspections qui se font plutôt fréquente ces temps-ci. Une ligne bien droite d’inspecteurs, disais-je. Étrangement, la vue de ces inspecteurs en uniformes éveilla en moi le souvenir d’une situation plus ou moins semblable lors d’un voyage en Europe, jadis. C’était dans un train, voyageant entre deux pays dont je ne me souviens plus trop lesquels, lors d’un arrêt à la frontière. L’inspecteur, vêtu d’un bel uniforme sombre, avancait dans l’allée du train avec un berger allemand et une mitraillette à l’épaule [c’était le fusil qui était à l’épaule évidemment, pas le chien, qui lui était au pied] et aboya d’une voix nazillarde “Passport! Schnell!” Mon compagnon de voyage et moi obtempérâmes obligeamment. L’inspecteur prit nos passeport et les examina négligemment, son regard passant plusieurs fois de la photo à nos personnes assisent sur le bout de nos sièges, souriant inconfortablement. Puis, il sorti un petit appareil portable où il entreprit d’entrer les numéros de nos passeports. Après quelques instant l’appareil émit un blip approbateur et l’inspecteur nous remis nos passeports sans autres commentaires pour passer aux passagers suivant.

Cette réminiscence ne dura que quelques bref instants. Juste le temps de me rendre devant une jeune dame dont l’uniforme sombre lui seyait à merveille. Je lui tendis promtement ma carte à puce. Elle la glissa contre son petit appareil portable qui émit un blip approbateur. Elle me remercia et se déplaça légèrement pour me laisser passer. J’entrepris d’escalader à grands pas les escaliers de la station de métro tout en songeant au bon souper chaud qui m’attendait à la maison. C’était en effet une situation similaire à mon souvenir. Il n’y manquait que le berger allemand et la mitraillette!

J’ai donc expliqué que, selon moi, l’“arctique” de la mort c’était quand on arrivait au bout du chemin, passé l’extrème jonction, dans le dead-end de l’existance. On a très froid, tout devient blanc autour de nous et la lumière est aveuglante. Toutefois, ai-je précisé, si tout le monde autour de vous est habillé en tuxedo noir et blanc alors c’est une situation totalement différante: on se retrouve alors dans l’“antarctique” de la mort! ;>

I have a few days off for the holidays and I intend to work on the house and finishing to clean up the warehouse / garage in order to be able to have some working space. A chaque année, document.write(“”); un peu avant Noël, se tient à la Place Bonaventure de Montréal le Salon des Métiers d’Art du Québec (pages web et FaceBook). Je n’y vais pas tout les ans, mais si j’ai le temps c’est une agréable occasion de se donner des idées de cadeaux de Noël ou simplement de voir ce que produisent nos artisans locaux. Ça ne vaut pas la peine de s’en priver puisque l’entrée est gratuite! La SMAQ expose le travail de plus de quatre-cent artistes et artisans professionnels, divisés en huit familles de métiers d’art (céramique, bois, textile, cuir et peaux, papier, verre, métaux et autres matériaux). On y retrouve quelques trucs inusités mais surtout des bijoux, vêtements et objects décoratifs. Cette année, on note la présence de quinze créateurs des Pays de la Loire et de l’exposition Fibres du monde.

Je n’y avais pas mis les pieds depuis plus de cinq ans mais comme cette semaine mon épouse et moi avions une journée de congé en même temps, on a décidé de se payer la traite visuellement avec une petite visite au SMAQ. Et, comme j’ai parfois l’habitude de le faire, je partage avec vous mes découvertes en mettant des liens vers les sites des artisans qui ont suscité notre intérêt. On les revisitera peut-être plus tard pour faire quelques achats (qui sait?):

  • Pottery Hazama: cette céramiste montréalaise d’origine japonaise nous offre des céramiques utilitaires (catégorie “Arts de la table et linge de maison”) d’une grande beautés. (Kiosque #Loft1)
  • Nelly Bichet: cette chapelière du Mans en France présente un ensemble de création et fabrication de pièces uniques et de petites séries de chapeaux et accessoires de têtes. Dommage que ce soit des importations (coûteuses) parce que ce sont de superbes chapeaux! (Kiosque #125)
  • Mosaïque Fleurie: cet artisan de Longueuil nous offre des compositions florales sur objects utilitaires et décoratifs en bois (chandeliers, Boîtes à mouchoirs, Cadres et mirroirs, Plaques de commutateurs, Plaques murales à crochets, etc.). Ça me donne toutes sortes d’idées… (Kiosque #345)
  • Jardins de Lumière: cet artisan de l’Estrie offre des vases en verre thermoformé (et accessoires) pour ceux qui font des créations florales et arrangements “Ikebana”. (Kiosque #404)
  • Renée Bovet: Cette artiste montréalaise peint sur soie des scènes urbaines dans un style coloré et un peu naïf. En plus des originaux sur soie, elle offre des reproductions lithographiques encadrées ou laminées (plus abordable). C’est très beau. (Kiosque #509)
  • Rachel F.: une entreprise montréalaise de création d’accessoires de cuir et de fourrure recyclés. Des beaux capots de poils! (Kiosque #519)
  • Les Moqueurs: situé à Sainte-Sophie dans les Laurentides, on y offre toute sorte d’objets humoristiques et utilitaires, dont des mémos fait de photos (pouvant être personnalisés avec vos propres photos) aimantés pour frigo. Plutôt amusant. (Kiosque #615)
  • La Maison Lavande: situé près de St-Eustache, c’est un cultivateur et producteur de produits dérivés de la lavande (dont, bien sûr, des parfums). Ce sera intéréssant de les visiter en juillet (et, situé à trente-cinq minutes au nord de Montréal, c’est certainement plus proche que les Cantons de l’Est). (Kiosque #616)
  • Les Étains Chaudron: cet atelier de Val-David offre une grande variété de “poterie” d’étain sans plomb formée à la main (ciselé ou martellé) mais j’ai été plutôt impressionné par de petites lampes à l’huile (particulièrement les martelées avec une petite poignée pour les transporter; si vous voulez me faire un cadeau, vous savez quoi!).   • L’Angélaine: cette chèvrerie et boutique situé à Bécancour offre des créations de tricots et tissages en Mohair (bas, tuques, foulards, mitaines, châles, chandails, jetés et couvertures, etc.). C’est chaud et quel rêve bucolique! (Les alpages!) (Kiosque #1117)
  • Cidrerie du Minot: situé à Hemmingford, une autre cidrerie connue pour son crémant de pomme. (Kiosque #1608)
  • Herboristerie La Maria: cette herboriste de St-Michel-de-Bellechasse offre une belle variété de tisanes biologiques cueillies et concoctées à la main. (Kiosque #1710)
  • Le Temps des Cerises: cette ceriserais situé à Charette (en Mauricie, un coin que je connais!) offre une gamme complète de produits à base de griotte (cerises acidulées, aka prunus cerasus): jus de griottes, griottes sèchées et griottes en conserve. Il parait que c’est un “superfruit” excellent pour la santé. À visiter sans doute! (Kiosque #1718)
  • Nutra-Fruit: cette compagnie de Québec offre toute sorte de produits de la canneberge: séchées, enrobées de chocolat noir, jus, thé, gelée, vinaigrette et moutarde. J’ignorais qu’on produisait de la canneberge dans les Bois-Francs. (Kiosque #1722)
  • Les vergers Écologiques Philion: situé près de Hemmingford, ce spécialiste en pomiculture nous offre l’habituel cidre de glace (Friga) mais aussi Gaia, un rare vin de poire de glace. (Kiosque #1734)
  • CaO: cette chocolaterie de Montréal vous fait déguster toute sorte de créations chocolatées mais offre surtout des ateliers où vous pourrez réaliser vous-même vos propres recettes. (Kiosque #1740)
  • Miel Morand: situé à St-Thomas, cet apicultueur offre de fins produits gourmets à base de miel. (Kiosque #1742)
  • La Fromagerie Chaput: Au kiosque Lait à la bouche on retrouvait, entre autres, les produits délicieux de cette fromagerie de Châteauguay. (Kiosque #2000)
  • Raffaele Rotondo: Cette artiste de Laval fait de la sculpture sur marbre qui offre un effet similaire à la sculpture sur pierre de savon Inuit (dont elle s’inspire beaucoup). Malheureusement, le site site internet est encore en construction mais ça faudra sûrement la peine d’y jeter un oeil quand ce sera prêt. (Kiosque #3030)

Scraplinking

I remember seeing my father seating at his old desk in the basement, surrounded by piles of newspapers. As he was reading them, he would clip articles that would interest him and — instead of gathering them in scrapbooks — would classify them in subject-indexed filing cabinets (he was particularly interested in national history, genealogy, or personalities belonging to some family names he was researching).

As a kid I quickly learned to emulate him and gathered my own newspaper clippings in files dedicated to subjects that would fascinate any kids in those days: prehistory, archaeology, dinosaurs, UFOs, paranormal, international politics, and the philosophy of religions. That’s an habit that probably made me the news junkie I am today, but I am now just realizing that I am still doing somekind of news scrapbooking — virtually! When I gather links of the news stories that interest me in my weekly press review I do it to share them with my (quasi-inexistant) readers, but mostly to keep them for my own future reading and research. Therefore I am continuing this old habit of news scrapbooking. It’s amazing that I am only realizing this now. That certainly makes sense as it takes less space and is more ecological!

Weekly Press Review (2011/12/09)

Busy couple of weeks both at work (a few co-workers were either off on vacation or on sick-leave, document.write(“”); so we were all scrambling around; we caught a dvd thief!) and at home (trying to finish preparing the house for winter but, as usual, there’s not enough hours in a day). I got my work schedule for winter and I am doing a little more hours than in fall so I am quite happy with it. A surprising revelation makes my life feels like a soap-opera (and that’s all I can say). The gray weather makes me feels tired and depressed… Reading the news (even on a binge) does nothing to improve the mood… (See the news links after the jump)

Despite some seemingly (and, document.write(“”); I am quite sure, temporary) good news, new and unexpected upheaval is making everyone at work very upset. This continuing situation is utterly depressing, unnerving and rather demotivating. (By Jove, what are they thinking?!) I just hope it will eventually calm down, because some of us cannot take this for long without damages. Luckily we recently had a pay raise… [Update: The rollercoaster ride continues… Up again! Some quite wise decisions averted the crisis and everyone is smilling again!] In other news, I visited the Montreal book fair, I am taking care of my sister’s cats for the week and we got the first snow of the season (a couple of inches [5 cm], enough so I had to shovel!). Yesterday was Thanksgiving in the USA: some people are simply thankful to have a job; for my part I am thankful to have found such a nice and affordable house. Happy Thanksgiving! (and, no, this it NOT Turkey’s “Independance Day”!) In order to try keeping my spirit up, I am reading some great comics and I am following the news (after the jump):

Clodjee au Salon: les découvertes

Toutes les années, document.write(“”); profitant de la Journée des Professionnels, j’aime bien faire mon tour au Salon du Livre de Montréal. Histoire de conserver un bon aperçu de l’industrie du livre au Québec. C’était très pertinent quand je travaillais dans l’édition et ce l’est toujours maintenant que je travaille en bibliothèques.

Je me souviens que, dans ma jeunesse, j’avais l’habitude de passer une journée entière au salon, déambulant inlassablement dans les allés, en cardo puis en decumanus, de cette cité livresque, à la recherche des derniers trésors. Malheureusement je n’ai plus la même endurance, ni la patience, et après trois heures j’en ai vite fait le tour. Il me semble que je ne vois plus rien. Il y a tellement de livres et de kiosques que nous sommes vite saturés.

Ne pouvant donc plus systématiquement tout inspecter, je laisse donc les découvertes se faire là où le destin porte mon regard (c’est une sorte de lèche-vitrine karmique). Et, bien sûr, je vais à l’essentiel: visitant les principaux gros distributeurs de manga et de Bédés pour voir les nouveautés, ainsi que mon éditeur de paralittérature favori (le seul, l’unique): les éditions Alire. De plus, depuis que je travaille en bibliothèques, je tend à m’attarder irrésistiblement, un peu, sur la littérature jeunesse. Heureusement le vendredi est une journée relativement tranquille (comparé au samedi), quoiqu’on a déjà de la difficulté à déambuler librement et que la ligne d’attente pour la séance de signature de Kathy Reichs était énorme (mais on m’a assuré que c’était bien pire le samedi).


Voici donc les découvertes qui ont attiré mon attention cette année au Salon du Livre de Montréal:

J’ai d’abord remarqué une plus grande présence du livre numérique: quelques éditeurs annonçaient leur catalogue numérique ou donnaient même des ateliers sur l’utilisation d’une tablette de lecture et Archambault avait encore un gros kiosque (en collaboration avec l’ANEL) pour promouvoir sa boutique virtuelle (anciennement jelis.ca). On y distribuait le dépliant “Le livre numérique simplifié en 7 questions” et incitait les propriétaires de tablettes de lecture à télécharger leur application Mes Livres / My Books (disponible sur iOS mais aussi Android).

J’ai aussi jeté un bref coup-d’oeil au magazine québécois Entre les Lignes (similaire à l’européen Lire) mais il n’existe pas pour l’instant de version électronique et un peu moins de $30 pour un abonnement annuel (4 numéros) c’est un peu cher pour mon budget de petit employé municipal! Heureusement, c’est disponible en bibliothèques.

Du côté nouveautés, j’ai découvert que Dargaud avait réédité Monster, l’intriguant manga de Naoki Urasawa, dans la collection Big Kana en une version intégrale deluxe (partiellement disponible en bibliothèques). J’ai aussi été tenté d’acheter le tout dernier Rabagliati, Paul au Parc (mais j’ai plutôt décidé d’attendre pour le lire en bibliothèques, où, chose surprenante, il est d’ailleurs déjà disponible!). Il y avait, bien sûr, les plus récents titres d’Alire: Malphas 1. Le Cas des casiers carnassiers de Patrick Sénécal, Odyssées chimériques de Claude Lalumière (un des rares recueils de nouvelles publiés chez Alire), et Montréel de Éric Gauthier (pour plus de titres voir leur catalogue 2011 ou visiter votre bibliothèque). Malheureusement, le DALIAF n’était pas présent au Salon, étant encore sous presses (mais il sera lancé à la fin du mois et sera donc bientôt disponible; voir l’entrée Épanouissement du DALIAF).

J’en ai également profité pour ramasser la brochure Guide des livres d’ici pour les jeunes 2011-2012 préparée par Communication-Jeunesse (la sélection annuelle des titres jeunesses est également disponible en ligne). Je me disais que ça pourrait toujours être utile…

The Girlfriend Experience is definitely not an entertaining movie — which is surprising considering that Steven Soderbergh is an experienced director (who gave us such movies as Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), Kafka (’91), Erin Brockovich (2000), Traffic (2000), Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Solaris (2002), and Che (2008)). However, it is certainly an interesting movie and reminds me more of the rather experimental productions from his early career. The movie is shot in video and edited in short sequences that tell the story in a non-linear way. As new characters are introduced you keep asking “ok, who’s that guy?”, and “when is this hapenning? Before or after this other sequence?” So it is very confusing and you cannot really enjoy the movie as you would normally do. Fortunately, the subject was interesting enough to keep me trying to make sense of it.

The movie tells the story of an independant, successful upscale prostitute who is able to maintain (or not) a balance between her job and her personal (romantic) relationships. The human aspects of this story is rather intriguing and would be quite an achievement if it would be original. Unfortunately, it’s not. It is suspiciously similar to a British TV series that I am quite fond of: Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Starring Billy Piper (Doctor Who), the series started in September 2007 and lasted four seasons for a total of thirty-two episodes. Itself based on the blog and books of Belle de Jour (a.k.a. Dr. Brooke Magnanti), The Intimate Adventures of a London Call Girl, the series tells the story of Belle, a successful high-class London Call Girl who has trouble balancing her job and the relationship with her boyfriend. Sounds familiar? There are really too much similarities to be a coincidence: the anecdote on how she does her accounting, the emphasis on fashion, and the fact that, in the end, whatever happens, all she can do (all she knows) is going back to “work”. Unfortunately for The Girlfriend Experience, the production quality, the acting and the incredible British humour makes of Secret Diary of a Call Girl an interesting AND very entertaining experience.

The Girlfriend Experience is definitely a below-average movie. It’s not only that I am already prejudiced against short movies (less than 100 min.), but this movie fails to deliver on too many aspects. When you put so much efforts advertising that your movie’s main actress is an ex-porn star you gotta put at least a few hot, realistic sex scenes. Instead, she delivers what seems like an unexpressive and emotionless performance. And the ad libbing of the actors creates dialogs that feel totally unnatural. And it’s not only me: according to Wikipedia the film did less at the box office (slightly above $1 M) than its production cost ($1.3 M) and received a poor rating from critics at Rotten Tomatoes (64%). The audience’s rating was even less (35%). Therefore I really cannot recommend this movie for any reason whatsoever. Unless you are masochistic, of course, or an unconditional fan of Soderbergh.

Another busy week. All the stress at work is finally getting to me (both mentally and physically). I am feeling really tired and definitely need a few days of vacation. The Holidays will probably be even crazier with all the work to move out the books from the library, document.write(“”); so I better get some rest before then. I also just got the flu shot so my entire body hurts. And there’s a zillion things that I still have to do in the new house. The heater in the guest room started slightly leaking again; I don’t know yet what I’ll do with that… The Montreal book fair is coming later this week and I’ll probably attend some workshops about children & YA literature just to keep my mind sharp. Finally, I really hate Google: not only they changed the interface of Blogger, but also of Reader, not only making them more confusing but also eliminating the functions I was using to gather my links for this entry. That’s why the Shared Items have not been updated in a while, so until I find an alternative solution (I’ll investigate Digg, Google+ or others whenever I have time later this week) ALL my suggested links can be found bellow:

Today is Remembrance Day (or Veterans Day in the United States). Set on the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I (November 11th 1918) it celebrates the soldiers who died for their country (more generaly in the U.S.A. it celebrates all veterans).

I used to think that such day was not worth remembering, document.write(“”); often feigning to have forgotten what it meant. I had this image in my mind of all those very elderly veterans at a ceremony who couldn’t really remember why they were there. I thought that the fact Canadian soldiers were mostly used as cannon fodder for the British Empire was not something that should be celebrated. Then again, the poor lads that gave their lives in those wars were oblivious of any political motivation and, after all, their sacrifice should not be forgotten.

So, there we are: have an happy Rememberance Day!

I am exiting the subway station and notice that it is raining outside. Sitting against the wall of the station, document.write(“”); under its protruding roof in an attempt to get some protection from the light rain, a young man in worn out clothes is begging. A small black labrador dog is sleeping at his sides. He asks me, “Can you spare some change, sir?” Trying to look contrite, but I am sure I sounded rather smart-assed, I answer him: “Sorry, son, if it’s change you want, I cannot help you. Change must come from within.” And I busily continue on my way home.

Épanouissement du DALIAF

Après des décennies de travail acharné, document.write(“”); le mythique Dictionnaire des auteurs des littératures de l’imaginaire en Amérique française (ou “DALIAF” pour les intimes) est finalement sous presse! Cela faisait si longtemps qu’on en parlait qu’on se demandait s’il finirait par éclore. C’est compréhensible: toutes les années de nouveaux auteurs sont publiés mais à un moment donné il faut mettre un point final à l’ouvrage. Nul doute que cette attente en valait la peine!

Compilé par Claude Janelle (à qui l’on doit aussi L’Année de la science-fiction et du fantastique québécois, Le XIXe siècle fantastique en Amérique française et La Décennie charnière) et publié par les Éditions Alire (le principal éditeur de paralittérature au Québec, qui est mieux connu pour les romans d’horreur de Patrick Sénécal ou les thrillers des Jean-Jacques Pelletier mais n’en est toutefois pas à la publication de son premier essai), le DALIAF recense la production des littératures de l’imaginaire (c’est-à-dire science-fiction, fantastique et fantasy) produite, entre 1835 et 2008 inclusivement, en Amérique du Nord francophone (mais principalement au Québec) et s’attarde particulièrement aux plus de mille sept cents hommes et femmes qui en sont les créateurs.

Le DALIAF est un ouvrage à la fois bibliographique, biographique et critique. Fort de 535 pages, il est publié en quadrichromie dans un grand format couverture caisse (couverture cartonnée et reliure cousue). Il coûtera 79,95 $ pour la version papier (978-2-89615-074-8) et 49,99 $ pour la version électronique (format pdf, 978-2-89615-479-1). Lancé à la fin du mois de novembre (manquant de justesse le Salon du Livre!?), il sera disponible chez Alire en décembre et en librairies dès janvier 2012. Quoique dispendieux (mais volumineux et en couleur!), c’est un outil de référence essentiel pour tout bibliothécaire, étudiant en littérature, intervenant de l’édition ou simplement amateur extrème du livre québécois. Et bien sûr, ayant publié quelques nouvelles comme auteur et quelques fanzines ou anthologies comme éditeur, on peut me trouver dans les pages du DALIAF. J’ai bien hâte de voir ça.

J’entre dans la station de métro en même temps qu’une bourrasque de vent. Je me rends en quelques pas vers l’escalier mécanique que je descends à grande vitesse, document.write(“”); pestant contre les gens qui ne respectent pas la tradition de tenir la droite dans les escaliers et couloirs du métro. Je murmure un vague “S’cusé” pour qu’on me cède le passage. Au bas de l’escalier, un camelot de L’Itinéraire, offrant des exemplaires du magazine dans un présentoire suspendu à son cou, répète machinalement “L’Itinéraire! L’Itinéraire!” Je n’y porte aucune attention mais au moment où je passe à ses côtés il m’interpelle: “Monsieur? L’Itinéraire?”. Je lui réponds, avec un air contrit, “Non, désolé, je sais très bien où je vais. Merci.” Et je continue mon chemin, sans ralentir, vers les tourniquets de la station…

Another though week at work due to the excruciatingly slow computer system. I finally got a plumber to repair the heating system at home. It was about time since it is getting quite cold at night. I also spent the entire day friday walking around in the city of Outremont, document.write(“”); enjoying the parks and looking at rich people’s homes. It’s nice to dream once in a while that you could be a millionaire. I think that’s the first time in six months that I could really rest and enjoy a sunny (although a little chilly) day.
