I was later confronted with a different problem: my older cat (which has unfortunately passed since then) was getting sick and he couldn’t crouch to normally pee into the litter; he was often overshooting the litter’s border and peeing on the wall. I needed to find a litter with higher borders which didn’t seem to be commercially available in pet shops. Again, I had to create one myself and I found inspiration in my previous experiences with both the cat house and the container-made litter: I simply purchased a bigger container, cut an opening in it with a strong carpet or box cutter and covered the sharp edge of the border with tape [see opposite] to insure that the cats wouldn’t cut themselves if they stepped on it. Here’s two more examples:

The smaller one (67.1 L, on the left) has a size of 23.3 x 18.7 x 12.3 inches [59.1 x 47.5 x 31.2 cm] and the larger one (89.9 L, on the right) has a size of 29 x 18 x 13.3 inches [73.6 x 45.7 x 33.7 cm]. Both have borders that are a little more than a foot high which is plenty of protection against overshooters!

J’ai souvent vu un tas d’oiseaux dans un arbre ou des pigeons alignés sur un fil, mais je ai été impressionné de voir un tas de chats alignés sur le dessus d’une clôture! Ici vous pouvez voir pas moins de sept chats dans les environs de mon arrière-cour (trois sur la clôture). Et, juste après que je ai pris cette photo, ils m’ont remarqué et ont tous couru vers mon balcon! C’était un peu hitchcockien… Après cela, ils ont traîné un peu sur ma clôture… Voir le vidéo après le saut de page:

Here you can see no less than seven cats in the vicinity of my backyard (three on the fence). And, right after I took this picture, they noticed me and all ran toward my balcony! “Le chat n’a pas pu empêcher la catastro- phe: Zlabya, sa maîtresse adorée, a épousé le jeune homme. Et le jeune homme a emmené Zlabya chez lui et il lui a offert une salle de bains. “Zlabya! Chez nous, il y avait un piano!” Voilà le chat épouvantablement triste, d’autant plus qu’il ne peut plus parler et que tout le monde s’en fout.”
“Et puis, la famille du jeune homme vivant à Paris et n’étant pas venue au mariage, Zlabya et son mari partent en voyage de noces à Paris. Avec le rabbin, sa malle pleine de livres et son chat. “Alger, une communauté juive du début du XXe siècle. Au centre de l’action, le chat du rabbin. Tordant, le chat : un squelette à oreilles, une dégaine de poubelle, un goût prononcé pour la discussion — c’est un chat parlant. En l’occurrence, il raconte à Zlabya, sa maîtresse adorée (et fille du rabbin), la vérité sur le Malka des Lions — un cousin qui doit arriver prochainement, tout auréolé et légende. On le dit capable de dompter un lion, même les yeux fermés. La vérité, c’est qu’il a pour ami un vieux lion poussif avec lequel il a monté un numéro : le lion effraie le monde, le Malka arrive et arrange tout. Ce qui lui attire gloire et récompenses variées.”
“En attendant, le rabbin a un problème : le consistoire israélite de France exige de lui qu’il fasse une dictée. En effet, s’il veut être agréé rabbin officiel au lieu de “juste rabbin comme ça”, il doit écrire en français — pour faire la prière en hébreu à des Juifs qui parlent arabe, note le chat dans sa grande sagesse.”

“Au début, le chat du rabbin ne parle pas. Il est simplement libre comme un chat et ronronne dans les bras de la fille du rabbin, Zlabya, sa maîtresse adorée. Mais dans la maison du rabbin, il y a ce perroquet qui jacasse sans arrêt, et le chat le bouffe. Maintenant, il peut parler, et il commence par mentir : le perroquet est allé faire une course, dit-il, la gueule pleine de plumes. Mentir, c’est mal. Le rabbin décide donc de remettre le chat dans le droit chemin et d’en faire un bon Juif. Moyennant quoi, le chat exige de faire sa bar-mitsva. S’ensuivent des discussions très pointues avec le rabbin du rabbin, qui en conclut qu’on devrait noyer le chat.”
“Malgré le plaisir qu’il prend à ergoter et chipoter à n’en plus finir, le chat a de la peine, depuis qu’il a la parole. Il a acquis un pouvoir dont il se passerait bien. Et finalement, il retourne vers le bonheur et les bras de sa maîtresse, à condition de se conduire comme un vrai chat et de ne plus jamais parler. Il est d’accord : ” Ça vaut le coup de fermer sa gueule pour être heureux.”

Le rabbin devra enseigner à son chat les rudiments de loi mosaïque ! Une lettre apprend au rabbin que pour garder son poste, il doit se soumettre à une dictée en français. Pour l’aider, son chat commet le sacrilège d’invoquer l’Eternel. Le rabbin réussit mais le chat ne parle plus. On le traite de nouveau comme un animal ordinaire. Son seul ami sera bientôt un peintre russe en quête d’une Jérusalem imaginaire où vivraient des Juifs noirs. Il parvient à convaincre le rabbin, un ancien soldat du Tsar, un chanteur et le chat de faire avec lui la route coloniale…”
